WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would Stay C

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

People should read up on the shameful history of Haiti. It has been intentionally kept impoverished for western interests. When Haiti eliminated slavery France demanded that they compensate France for its economic loss, which kept the country heavily in debt for decades. The USA overthrew and kidnapped their elected president. The IMF has imposed all sorts of harmful policies on Haiti, as it has done to many other poor nations.

Haitians should establsh policy for the country not outsiders with a vested interest in exploiting the nation's impoverished condition.

Whose says we arent ran by corporations? This is more proof that corporations dominate our politics not only at home but overseas. Welcome to America

I don't think there are many people who argue that corporations run D.C. It's just split between people who dislike them and people who are glad to be ruled by them.

Heres the thing. You want higher wsges to make ppls lives better. As if that higher wage doesnt come with a cost. It does. You dont care if someone "rich" is harmed as long as the little guy gets what hes owed! That is very short sighted, and causes serious problems for everyone.

It's a sad situation down there in Haiti. I've been down there, and that was 20 years ago. It was poor then. I have Haitian neighbors.

Haitians need jobs, not charity.

Is that your opinion of US citizens as well?

Yes because keeping wages as low as possible and keeping people in miserable poverty so a few rich people can get more profits is such a good thing for humanity. It says a lot about our government when they actively support these policis.

That's not what's going on, which is why you and people liek you fail, why your ideas when tried on a large scale produce true misery and disparity.

Stop with the class warfare ****, it's old. It's not rich people enslaving poor people LOL haha look us were rich and you'll always be poor!!! I can't stand that simpleton outlook on life.

So tell us then, would you have levis and hanes move thier factories? Xlcause if the cost of doing business went up that would happen. How would that help?

You expect if they raise wages they will automatically pack up and move. Their are many cases where wages were raised and the companies did not move. Raising wages and jobs staying in the country are not mutually exclusive.

You also ignore the point that our government pressured them to keep wages low. So much for the "free market"

You also assume these companies have some obligation to stay if the price of labor goes up.

Realism. The "free market" you so hate isn't just one country, it's a big damned world. Rising costs in one place effects other places. But YOU ignore that.

In a "free market" neo-liberal context, no i do not. But my personal opinion says they should, they should do the morally right thing.

And you still dont say anything about our direct involvement in this, instead blame it on the "rest of the world" :lamo

Waht, the state dept has a duty to see to the interest of US companies. If their cost go up, that hurts these businesses. HELLO, people in the US have stock in said companies, there is more here then then CEO's paycheck. Government's tend to work like that, for various reasons. Something few in this thread wish to address.

Man. That doesnt sound like the free market conservatives usually uphold! But hey, thanks for proving my point that we are ran by corporations and that the US gov when it comes to foreign policy, really only cares about corporate interests! :lamo
