What do you do when sanctions run out?" he asked, leaving hanging the inference that the EU does not want - and could not afford - a more physical confrontation with Russia.

In the end, the ambassador's country joined the rest in unanimously agreeing the measures which were less tough than sanctions imposed by the United States.

Austria is among the doubters. "Sanctions don't solve problems," said Chancellor Werner Faymann. "The solution can only be getting to negotiations."

"We have done what we said we could do, but, yes, the U.S. is from Mars, we are from Venus," said Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who wanted at least four more names on the EU list but was rebuffed by other member states.

"I would suggest that we are not overly enthusiastic when it comes to introducing sanctions, because we will pay for it."

It sounds like the Polish Foreign Minister has hit the nail on the head! Brave man, reminding people of the past when faced with what's happening today. It seems that there is a great deal of apprehension in the region, probably with good cause, about agreeing in haste to something which may not be the best solution in the long run, but what might be the lesser of two evils currently. Time will tell...

I'm guessing the Democrats hope that happens, too. Who gives a flying....whether Putin sanctions anybody or not? Hell, McCain is right - it's a badge of honor to be sanctioned by that petty little pissant.

If I was the Polish foreign minister, I'd be listening hard for the sounds of Russian tank engines warming up on his border. This is all so reminiscent of the European inaction when Hitler began gobbling up countries one at a time. They'd ring their hands and call for talks to resolve the 'crisis', which of course is exactly what the Germans wanted.

The Right clearly has a real admiration for the strong man dictator approach to government. You only have to read any thread on the Ukraine to understand this.

It seems our immature Congress can't comment on other world leaders anymore, without it descending into "nah, nah you're a meanie tyrant and dictator who oppresses everyone". You beat me to it. This whole tit for tat thing is so juvenile.

Are you upset with what the Chancellor of Austria is saying. Guess you just discovered that there a whole Mass of people that think nothing like the way you do. Did you once again jump without looking? Any trouble with reading tonight?

Now you can Explain how I am stabbing my nation in the back Nimby. You weren't attempting to bring any of that weakness my way were you now?

Are you upset that Russia is mocking the US and the EU? Instead of looking to put the blame on those that you can't handle taking any message from. Perhaps you should hold those accountable that got out-witted, manipulated, and out played and out-classed. Bout time you start holding those accountable for their failures which can Imperil a Nation.

Is that what you were thinking the Polish FM was saying Lady P? That he is reminding us of the past. I think he is pointing out that difference between the US and the EU moreso and how things are looked at.....now.

Poland, especially, has specific reason to remember the recent past. The EU is kinda over a barrel here, because of their proximity to Russia, and their dependence on Russia's oil and gas. It seems they are trying to "go along to get along" while we seem to be pushing towards an outright confrontation. Am I misreading this? Crimea didn't ask for our assistance in anything they wanted to do...we interjected ourselves into the mix. IMO, France is agitating and attempting to draw us into this, the same way they did in Libya, where we will bear the brunt of whatever happens. There seems to be a bigger game in play here, and I don't like the feel of it, that's all.
