Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended - ABC News

A central Ohio principal says she suspended a 10-year-old boy from school for three days for pretending his finger was a gun and pointing it at another student's head. The boy's father says it's the adults who are acting childish for suspending the boy from Devonshire Alternative Elementary School in Columbus last week.

I'm with the dad on this one.

When he's old enough to be on the football team, he can get away with it - and a lot more.

It's Ohio, after all.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Hmmm kinda a silly policy but the kid can't say he wasn't warned and there does need to be consequences for not following school policy. I wonder if the father even bothered to read the three newsletters sent home about it.

The fifth-grader said he was "just playing around." But district spokesman Jeff Warner told The Columbus Dispatch ( Boy points finger like gun, gets suspended | The Columbus Dispatch ) that Devonshire Principal Patricia Price has warned students about pretend gun play numerous times this year, and everyone should know the rules by now. He said warnings have been included in three newsletters sent home with kids.

Warner says the boy put his finger to the side of the other student's head and pretended to shoot "kind of execution style."

"The kids were told, 'If you don't stop doing this type of stuff, there would be consequences,'" Warner said. "It's just been escalating."

Great! With the giant Russian military threatening the Ukraine our country is doing this. What a pathetic pile of slime this nation has become.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

once again the no tolerance i mean no thinking policy of schools win. i thought schools were suppose to be institutions of thought and logic not stupidity but i guess we have a different education system today.

wonder if OH will adopt the same laws other states are adopting to prevent schools systems from doing this sort of thing.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Good thing that's not my kid. I would be at the school house starting some ****.

If it was your kid and you felt like that I would hope you would have been there when the first newsletter was sent home.

See this parent seemingly didn't give a **** about the policy until his little angel violated it.

There ought to be consequences for creating such school policies, like the entire school board being booted. Such zero tolerance policies have been shown to fail.

True and who better to stand up than the parents? If your child came home with some idiotic new policy would you just blow it off, cry when your child violated it, or stand up and try to do something about it? Would this parent even care if this hadn't happened with his own child?

Since the school had already adopted the policy, and presumably was not challenged, then the parents deserve the aftermath.

Stupid **** like this needs to be nipped in the bud immediately, not after the fact.

How much you want to bet that the gun haters don't include, the number of school shootings by a finger , cut out cardboard gun or gun shaped cookie, in their statistics?

yes a kid being a kid and doing nothing wrong deserves suspension because the principal of the school is to stupid to use his own head and brain.
we played cops and robbers and cowboys and indians all the time.

we had laser tag and water guns. we shot paintball at each other and everything else. there is nothing wrong with it unless you agree that no thinking policies are good
to go by.

I don't stay quiet when the school does something stupid.

My sons teacher wants me to grade my son at home and send the report card to school.

I told them I will not do that.

I need to know what is happening at school, they do not know what is happening at home.

I do not need to be graded as a parent. I don't even understand why they would want that, but I made it clear it will not be happening.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

My question is that if any connection to a gun are a shape of a gun is to be connected to a punishment in the kids head, who is going to volunteer to go into the military?

The psychological damage will be long lasting.

Nasty boy you are!

So you think that the teachers are being paid to grade your child's work.....oh...oops....wait a minute!

We work with our kids at home with their homework, and interact with their teachers, but there are limits.

We have never been asked invasive questions.....yet.

I want the school to do their job and not worry about what is my department. That is not to say I don't work with them, but why would they need to know how my child is behaving in my house?

Have you visited your local recruiters office?

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Guns in schools are no laughing matter, I suspect we can all agree on that? While a 3 day suspension is ridiculous, a consequence of some sort is fair. I suspect the true spirit of the idea was to remove even "joking" about guns from schools. I have no problem with that idea whatsoever.

You're right. Let's expel the kid because the school is a "gun-free zone".

I didn't say expel the kid. I would suggest you actually read my post. But then I know you don't do that.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Pretending to shoot another student in the head is pretty sadistic behaviour in and of itself, especially since the kid knew the rules.

The kid showed he has no respect for guns, gun safety, other students or school authority. Imo, a three day suspension is a good and well deserved penalty.

What must be stopped and considered a criminal act of terrorism is if a teacher points at a child. Death threats like that should not be tolerated and treated as harshly as possible.

Most rational people can make the distinction.
