An idiot? No. A potential danger to the student body? Yes.

That's why I think the policy goes overboard. Pointing it another student's head would perhaps warrant an investigation to ensure that it wasn't an actual threat. Immediate suspension? I wouldn't think it's worth it.

We didn't play cowboys and indians or cops and robbers, but our play resembled what was popular on television for our age. Play fighting was a regular feature of our recesses.

Yep they do. Forbidding them to play a certain harmless game should not be one of them.

However, whenever the student in question is severely punished by the school system for what it perceived to be a threat, when it wasn't, you invite a great many problems to the table. There are many students that may be disproportionately impacted due to what is more a problem of social etiquette than violent intent.

Completely absurd. That'd be like you playing air guitar for an hour and assuming you could fill in for Van Halen.

Many bosses would fire an employee for the sin of talking back or trying to upstage them or just being insubordinate. Teachers see this nearly each and every day.

Attendance is another area. In my high school where I taught, the average student was absent a bit over 30 times - a semester as there was no district wide attendance policy. That works out to sixt absneces or more in a year. That would get you fired on most jobs.

    I hope that helps.

It is absurd, but that's what zero-tolerance policies presume. The wider the zero-tolerance policy becomes, the more behaviors become presumed for ill intent.

I can see your point and would concede that zero tolerance can result in miscarriages of justice. But again, lets get back to why the policy was instituted in the first place and we can see why districts all over America rushed to the policy.
