There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

excellent turtle. Thank you much for confirming what I posted earlier in this discussion

You and I both know darn well that if this was not somehow connected to guns, neither you or lots of other gun lobby sycophants would give two craps about the topic. lets call a spade a spade and flush all this fascism and think for yourself crap down the toilet where it belongs.
    Well done.

But you did make it about him, and I was merely correcting your error. You're welcome.

I see this as a problem that is long overdue to be addressed. We've had enough examples of ridiculous administrations of these zero tolerance policies that schools should have revised them long ago.

Strawman? In what way exactly? I clearly stated the time to dispute a policy is when it is proposed before the school board or school itself. Once it is the official policy, then a responsible parent can pursue several avenues including lobbying for a change, removing the child from school to a different school where the policies are different, or even home schooling. I was very clear that the responsible parent DOES NOT use their child as some sort of insurgent being taught to break the rules as that only undermines the school and the population of the school.

Now how is that a strawman?

As someone who taught in the system for 33 years and spent the last 23 as a union rep representing all teachers at a large school, elected Chairperson of all the high school members in the High School Chapter plus helping to negotiate the district contract - I can tell you without any doubt that one reason the zero tolerance policy was established in the first place was a reaction to lawsuits undertaken by parents and groups who strongly objected to selective discipline in which some students were penalized for actions that others may not have been penalized for. It was viewed as arbitrary and capricious and in some cases based on race, ethnicity or gender and was not equal. Districts were tired of the legal expenses and awards in losing cases. So zero tolerance was adopted to negate that sort of objection and it has worked.

Again, if this topic did not have to do with guns, it would have generated a page or two of responses by those interested in education and that would have been the end of it. So please - lets be honest and admit what tail is wagging this particular dog.

I read the Ohio zero tolerance law and in it there's a provision for districts to create "alternative" schools where other schools in the district can send their delinquint and troubled students. I suspect that Devonshire Alternative Elementry school is one of those "alternative" schools, which suggests that dear innocent little Nathan has issues and a past that the article doesn't mention.
One can suspect all they want, but the bottom line is it is plain stupid to expel a student for pointing a finger.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.
