FDA panel debates technique that would create embryos with three genetic parents

From the informal liberal to English dictionary:

You're just proving Godwin's law-shut up, you might prevent another holocaust with all your going on about learning from past mistakes

You do realise, had this technology been available to Hitler, the Holocaust probably wouldn't have happened? Hitler could have simply ordered all babies genetically manipulated to appear of Aryan stock, rather than killing people he didn't like.

You know what really made the Holocaust possible? Guns. Do you think we should ban guns?

Re: genetically modified babies (WAPO)

You say "designer babies" I say "baby born free of genetic disease."

Re: genetically modified babies (WAPO)

I'm afraid of the genetic stuff that's going to happen in the future. I support genetics for disease prevention, but once we start designing humans I think we are tampering with an evolutionary process that we don't really understand. I mean, evolution theory states that children of genetic engineering must still survive to reproduce, otherwise their modifications were failures, but something tells me it won't be so neat and cozy. The way science is being used in America is kind of a freak show at this point anyway. Bring it on... let's add another layer of experimental humanity to the mix. Can't be anymore radical than other stuff that's been done.

Re: genetically modified babies (WAPO)

My guess is that it will be helpful to many, unhelpful to some and be horrible for a few.

However, combining three 'donors' to make up one child seems to open up a host of legal problems (and possibly some unforeseen genetic ones) if this is not thought through properly.

And my experience has been that humans usually do not think things through nearly enough before they do something.

If this technology had been around back then, he probably would have attempted to create a race of supermen, and there's no reason to believe that a Holocaust wouldn't have occurred against those "subhumans" already in existence. In fact I have no doubt that, if we remain on our current course, a future Hitler will attempt the creation of a super race.

So we'll shoot him in the head with our space lasers.

This wild speculation of yours is not a reason that children should be born with major genetic diseases.

I don't have a problem with anyone using technology to make a better human. The problem is when you start murdering people. There is a difference.

If they can give my kid x-ray vision, I'm getting that kid x-ray vision.
