Ukraine Crisis: Russia Deploys Ships and Troops in Crimea

Russia is believed to be deploying military ships carrying troops in the disputed autonomous Crimea region of Ukraine, as Moscow continues to refuse to recognise the interim administration which has taken control of Kiev.

Reports suggest the movement of Russia's large landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov, with at least 200 soldiers onboard, at the Russian Black Sea Fleet's base at Sevastopol.

The ship is said to be accompanied by at least four other vessels with an unknown number of Special Forces Troops onboard, sailing from the Russian port of Anapa to the Crimean/Ukrainian Sevastopol.

It makes sense that Russia is going to be directly involved in a border state in instability.

I wonder if Putin will accept losing this old Russian province to Poland, Germany and freinds.

I'd think he'd be delighted to give them Chernobyl and the Western Ukraine Neo-Nazis. Of course, he will immediately charge World market prices for the Natural Gas Russia sends to these areas. You subsidize your friends, not those creating instability in your backyard.

I'll bet Rootin" Tootin' Putin will have his way here as he is prepared to use military while Obama slashes our military to the size it was prior to World War II reducing our ability to do anything for anyone peoples anywhere. The Democrats have replaced the once mighty eagle with a pigeon.

He has certainly done International Affairs 101. So let's see how the thing plays out. I wonder if the EU's Mr schultz and Lady Ashton have a plan for military involvement.

As much as I abhor Putin and despise him, I would say this would have been pretty typical, Putin or not. If a country that has many ties with you both culturally, linguistically, economically, and politically faced such a situation, a country that doesn't respond this way would be weak country indeed.
For comparison, think of how the US would react if Canada faced a collapse of governance. Undoubtedly it would immediately send troops, aid, and such to prevent a destabilization of the situation.

Good!

Every problem needs the military thrown at it.

Would these troops be sent in to protect the protesters or the Canadian government?

It's no surprise that Russian ships are at Sevastopol. It remained the home base of the Russian Black Sea fleet, despite being part of Ukraine since 1991.

In what possible situation would they be sent in to support a popular protest to topple the Canadian government?

If the Canadian government started shooting it's citizens for basically showing up at non violent protests.

But the protests aren't non-violent! Where does this **** come from.

You ask a hypothetical question, in what scenario would the US military be sent in to support a popular protest to topple the Canadian government.

If the Canadian government could and might nuke the US into oblivion, then we'd have to probably think long and hard before taking action.
Another country that is a strategic interest, on our border, trades with us and has our protection is similar to what the Ukraine is to Russia.

Who are you suggesting could and would nuke us.

Russia of course.

I think 'mutually assured destruction' prevents it but if we used our military to intervene in the Ukraine, against Russian troops?

I still think it is more likely than not that Russia doesn't send troops into Ukraine. But only just. I think they will use proxies to create more devolved autonomy for pro-Russian spheres of support and if the government in Kiev plays ball they will drop Yanukovych and enter into a slow detente.

I wasn't suggesting we should use our military in Ukraine. I agree with MAD.

Well now, how CON of you. BushII didn't 'do anything' for Georgia when Russia invaded, and that was after doing a PR 'we stand by you' empty song and dance. One might say BushII replaced the 'once mighty eagle' with a turkey.

Now let's review the 'eagles' actions in Eastern Europe since WWII. Did Eisenhower opt to invade Hungary when the Soviets put 17 Divisions in during the uprising of 1956? Did Reagan support the Polish uprising which drug on through-out his two terms?

There are some very simple equations to do here, how many units can we put into the Ukraine vs the Soviets? What are the turnaround times for air support for both the Russians and the USAF? Will NATO pour dozens of combat units into the Ukraine?

Now history tells us so many times our reward when we tried to 'protect' a nation with American lives and treasure is a piss poor result vs the other nation defending themselves with THEIR lives and our support?

I'd say it is time to replace the cowboy penis with the did better than a C in school brain... :peace

Yup. Plus an additional 200 troops isnt going to influence it one way or the other.
