Powerful GOP lobbyist drafts bill to ban gay athletes from playing in the NFL | The Raw Story

Washington lobbyist Jack Burkman issued a statement saying that his firm, J M Burkman & Associates, is preparing legislation that would ban gay athletes from playing in the National Football League (NFL).

In a statement, Burkman wrote that “We are losing our decency as a nation. Imagine your son being forced to shower with a gay man. That’s a horrifying prospect for every mom in the country. What in the world has this nation come to?”

According to the statement, the idea for a Congressional ban on gay athletes in the NFL came to him after he watched coverage of Michael Sam’s decision to come out of the closet prior to the NFL draft. In recent weeks, Sam has been praised by many Democratic lawmakers, as well as First Lady Michelle Obama, who called him “an inspiration.”

Classic. The GOP slowly sliding into an irrelevant regional party based upon hate. May God have mercy on their souls.

If people don't want gay people to play in the NFL than vote with your dollars and don't support the NFL. The market won't work when the government imposes on the NFL in either direction here. If they can't hire gays than the market can't function, but if they must, than again, it can't function. The market is where people should fight this battle, but of course, neither side listens to me.

I guess the market won't work so well when the government imposes on the NFL in either direction though. If they can't hire gays than the market can't function, but if they must, than again, it can't function. The market is where people should fight this battle, but of course, neither side listens to me.

Hmmm. Does this analogy work with blacks at lunch counters, too? (Rhetorical question, no need to actually reply)

He hardly speaks for the GOP and I doubt that this bill is ever cosponsored by any member of Congress. You can't attribute the ridiculousness of this "powerful" lobbyist to the entire party.

Thank you. I'm amazed at how a candidate or a lobbyist can be taken so seriously when they come up with their awful ideas. When they are actually Senators or Congressmen, yes, if they propose something stupid you can try to blame their whole party, although even then that isn't really valid.

So ridiculous, isn't it? If football players object to showering with gays, guess what? Their teams will build private showers. Jesus. Problem solved. (That almost stopped my heart it was so complicated.)

The fact that the NFL is a 10 billion dollar industry and doesn't already have private showers should tell you something about how willing they are to change the traditional ways

For your post to have much meaning, you'd have to show that it's been a concern up 'til now.

To be sensibly partisan, DEMs need to report the facts and step out of the way of the GOP,
on all these little "NUGENTS" spouting off, like the Kansas candidate.
DEMs need to focus on the messages coming from the GOP, but not allow themselves to be shot as messengers .

My mistake. I guess this is really an isolated incident, and the GOP would never actually consider anything like this. At all.

It may not have been such a outspoken concern but from my personal experience as a high school and college player the shower factor is the main reason against wanting a gay teammate. Some might hide behind the reasoning to cover their dislike of gays in general but I think it is a genuine concern for a lot.

So you are OK showering with someone gay who is in the closet, but not if he's openly gay? Seems like a strange concern....

Not really, its the reason don't ask don't tell worked so well to ease the concerns of straight soldiers

Why does this idea freak men the **** out like this? It's not contagious, they're not gonna jump you when your back is turned, it doesn't mean your gay if gay guy looks at you. It makes no sense to me at all. It takes maturity to ignore it and go about your business. What a bunch of insecure little boys.

So I suppose you would just hop right into your local gym shower with a bunch of guys?

Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding!!!!

You win!!

Kansas Republicans Violate The Constitution By Passing Anti-Gay Segregation Law

I disagree with that bill as well, but they aren't exactly similar. The Kansas bill allows private religious entities to not offer services relating to marriage to those who providing their services would mean breaking their religious beliefs. Your source by the way completely misrepresents the Kansas bill. For example it states that an officer could refuse to help a gay couple being assaulted if it went against his beliefs, which is actually completely untrue.

Burkman's bill mandates that a private company cannot hire openly gay people. It actually limits what a private company can do with it's resources.

That's different. From my experience gays and lesbians approach people with a little more caution until they are certain of their orientation and gay men are certainly more cautious in a situation like this (being very aware of the violent reactions they are likely to encounter)

It worked so well? LOL.

So you're ok showering with gays, as long as you don't know they are gay. I'll be honest. That sounds a little...gay.

I always thought it was strange to have one big room for showering. Who wants to shower with other people of same gender? Really, does anyone really want to do that besides perhaps gays? I don't. It always disturbed me that people would build the showers facilities that way. We have little tiny walls between urinals, but nothing in the shower, really? Ummm...what?

So you call men immature insecure little boys for something you are unwilling to do yourself?

You want to have a real conversation or do this stupid ****? Think about it and get back to me.

How about the fact they are sexually attracted to men and we are men. Maybe that is unsettling in the locker room shower. Ever think of that? Really though, the entire locker room shower set up is idiotic. No one wants to shower with other dudes. It's ****ing weird.
