Former refugee who fled Dardania after witnessing arrival of Royal Marines achieves boyhood dream of joining them

As a boy he watched the Royal Marines arrive in war-torn Kosovo, their sights set on ending Slobodan Milosevic's persecution of ethnic Albanians.

It was then that 14-year-old Arben Islami made a promise to himself - one day he would wear the green beret.

Fourteen years later and the former refugee, who fled his home alone, has achieved his dream.

I have been meaning to present to you this story. Sorry about the delay :)

So... Any thoughts? Comments maybe?

If you would like an issue to get you started then here is one:

1) His surname is Islami. The Brits are considering withdrawing citizenships from those Muslims that fight abroad. Any chances that this move could generalize to all Muslims. I mean his last name is Islami?

2) How long could a Dardanian Albanian join the USA troops or better the Presidential FBI bodyguards? It took this much time for Islami for Royal troops, how long would it take for someone abroad to become USA's FBI Presidential Bodyguard?

Not sure you point here. Honestly, i found that most "feel good" stories on this site have minimal discussion. Whats to argue here?

Good on him for realizing a goal he's strove for since his youth. Per mare, per tarrum!

Yes, you are right that feel good stories do not leave much space for discussion. But I generated two sub-topics just for that case.

The first one above explored potential guilty-by-association, improper generalizing of negative Islamic prejudices to Arben Islami also, since he is a Muslim (obviously). The second asked the duration of a non-American to be a member of USA army or secret service and seeks comparison with the one Arben underwent.

Here is a third one: Is anyone jealous that Arben joined the British army and did not joined the USA army for instance maybe?

Why is it obvious he's a Muslim? Just because his surname? I've met a Mohammed that was an evangelical Christian.

And the US military allows non-citizens to enlist. As long as they're a legal resident. There is no minimum time requirements.

An Albanian though, with such a surname, would at least have a Muslim background.

Being a resident takes too long though. Look it took Arben 10 years or so!

Not really. Being in the US legally gives you residency. For someon like this individual on refugee status, they'd receive this type of residency upon arrival. No time at all.
