I don't know any major corporations that represent a trade field. Most are independent contractors or small companies. Could you name one?

I was drawing an analogy here I thought that was fairly obvious, but I guess not.

It is what I did as well. Union wages made the cost of living a challenge for non union people. When my wife got pregnant with our son we were looking in to a bigger house (ours was a very cool 1br 1ba craftsman cottage built in 1951) and discovered that we would both have to work full time to pay for while our son would be raised in a day care. So we decided to move, and after much research ended up here in the north Georgia mountains. I opened my own business (coming up on our 7th anniversary now), something I would not have been able to afford to do up there.

When he was old enough to go to school she went back to school too, funded by Pell and Hope, and is now a medical lab technician. I have friends up there who are union and still struggle to make ends meet while we are debt free. I took up shooting sports as a hobby, something that is nearly impossible in the communist state of Illinois, and we love it. Much lower cost of living, less stress, and better schools to boot. The property tax rate here is 1/4 of what it was there.

And here, our politicians don't look down on us and tell us how to live, they come to dinner with us and value our opinions. As Doug Collins said at one of our meetings, "I love coming back here. I can get real fried chicken, fried okra, and I know for a fact I am not the only one carrying". Another thing he said that brought the room down, "We are in the 9th Congressional district, said to be the most conservative on the east coast. I am often asked by those in Washington what is wrong with people down here, I respond that there is nothing wrong with them, they are real Americans. The rest of the country just hasn't caught up yet."

A quick scan of his Facebook page makes it clear that he's still the same guy who said last year that America needs a "white Republican president again."

'Joe The Plumber' Describes His New Union Job, Contemplates The Meaning Of 'Tea Bagger'

I'm not sure which is funnier...

That he works for a company that was bailed out, or that he's a union guy now.

Either way, you can't make this **** up.
Sometimes you don't have a choice. If you want to work and you're a one skilled individual and the unions own that industry/trade - what other options do you have?

In some areas the only way to get a license to be a plumber is if you join the local union.

Hell, I'm anti-union and at one point I had to work for a union to pay bills and resented every second of it (not the job but being part of the union).....

So, it's not funny - it just goes to show how much unions actually control.

A lot of people want to complain about the rich - well how much money do you think these union bigheads make???? These guys make 8 figures and use union dues to contribute to politicians that will keep them in those positions.

    go somewhere else
go work somewhere else that is not unionized
    start your own non-unionized shop
    get another career
be born into a wealthy family
but one thing is for certain, there is no one holding a gun to the job applicant's head forcing him to accept a job at a unionized bargaining unit

show us some American cities that refuse to issue a license to a tradesman who does not carry a union card. you insist they are out there. now show us that you know what you are posting about

wow. a unionized job helped you pay your bills, and you resented the fact that you actually had an entity looking out for your well being on the job. you don't sound very grateful

So, it's not funny - it just goes to show how much unions actually control.
unlike employees who work on 'at will' jobs, the union employees are not subject to the arbitrary whims of the owners/managers, which could adversely affect their working conditions. unions keep employees from being powerless pawns

yes, those corporate big wigs make nothing i suppose. well, unless they are unionized, chances are the employees are making close to nothing. meanwhile, the elite are hogging the majority of the new wealth
never understood how so many people could be convinced to argue against their self interest. this is but a recent prime example

Try Cook County Illinois - in order to be an HVAC, electrician, plumber etc you "need" to join the union - it's not a prerequisite but it certainly is frowned on if you're not union, because 9/10 times the county will refuse your license...

Of course then the only way these guys can get work is if they find potential customers you ****ing hate unions...

Unions should be illegal because they violate monopoly laws.

If I was a politician I would make it my ****ing business to destroy all labor unions and institute right to work....

Hard working people shouldn't be forced to join a POS union just to feed their families..

The best part is that my great-great grandfather was a union big shot delegate here in Chicago in the 30's - now I want to destroy it all.

Also unions didn't do a goddamn thing for me besides steal 100 bucks a month out of my paycheck calling them "union dues."
