US Secretary of State John Kerry slammed Russia on Monday for "enabling" Syria's President Bashar al-Assad to stay in power in the war-torn country, after Geneva peace talks broke off without result at the weekend.

" Russia needs to be a part of the solution and not be distributing so much more weapons and so much more aid that they're in fact enabling Assad to double-down. Which is creating an enormous problem."

At the weekend, Kerry blamed the Syrian regime's "obstruction" for the breakdown at the talks.

On Monday he also lashed out at Syria again, saying the regime "refused to open up one moment of discussion legitimately about a transitional government".

"Everybody should agree that the Assad regime's attitude is what has made these talks tougher," he added.

Truly Team Obama has no clue with what they are doing overseas.....really to try and blame just Assad is Pathetic. Now to call out the Russians for providing Arms.....while the Saudi and the US providing weapons and aid. While all around the region and the UN knowing. Is quite lame.

Its increasingly clear this Administration does not know how to proceed forward. They need to wake up.....Syria is not going to be handed to the Sunni and the Saud. Assad is winning.....there is no reason for him to even listen to this BS. No reason to respond.

The entire UN knows the US has backed the Rebels/Terrorists and have done so despite knowing who was all involved with the opposition. When they set up the Original leadership. Trying to fall back onto Obama's words of Assad must go, isn't working. Its not going to work.

So go back and tell Obama get over it.....No one is listening to your lying ass anymore.

this obsession with "transitional" gov't is stalling any progress. Assad is brutal (barrel bombs) - so are ISIL al-Nusra, and the assorted jihadists, the Sunni's.
Syria has an air force, and Hezbollah. Saudi Arabia is funneling arms. It is a regional AND proxy war.

"Assad must go" is crap. no fan of Assad, but what is the alternative? Aleppo is in ruins, Homs was just evacuated - while shelling was happening.

Find a way to stop the war, best thing is no preconditions. Then worry about governing

Mornin' AT. :2wave: Its a crock of ****. That's what it is. Transitional government, yeah Right. Get over that ridiculous BS.

Look there is No transitional government. They don't run nothing. They don't call any shots. They have no say. They are nothing without outside backers.

This is all Russia has to say.....that because the West views this perception to be so. Shows the loss of reality that is disrespectful to the rest of the UN and the people of the world.

The UN recognizes Bashar Assad as the ruling government inside Syria. You have all set up arrangements thru the UN to deal with Bashar Assad. Not the Rebel/Terrorists.

Then Lavrov should look dead into the Suadis' eyes.....and tell him. If you don't put an end to this game. Then we will come for your pathetic ass. Which you know.....you can't even handle 3rd world backward countries. Let alone trying to call out a Bear.....Now STFU an quit whining to the US to speak for you.

There is just 1 solution for Syria -> international coalition goes in, wipes the place clean of rebels and terrorists, removes assad from power, allows for free and democratic elections, bugs out.

Anything else, supporting either side, is bad. Because neither side is good... I say neither but really there are like, 3-4 factions fighting in that small country. The loyalists, the islamists, the kurdish separatists and the liberation army which is... you know... almost gone either dead or coopted by the islamists.
There is no good side.

just look at the huge amount of factions, then look at the "spillovers" in Lebanon and Iraq. If an 'international coalition" goes in - how do you remove all these groups? They are embedded.

More importantly if you could even do so, it just leaves a complete power vacuum. How do you keep them from returning??

Mornin' RM. :2wave: Problem with that scenario. Is then the country will still be handed to the Majority of Sunni Arabs as they will flood the elections to make sure no others gain control.

I could see doing this.....if we wiped out the Saudis permanently and remove one of the major causes of the Sectarian divide and all that self alleged Kingship and controlling of their other puppets.

Well, it's not a huge amount of factions. It's 4 factions according to wikipedia (but they count the syrian liberation as part of islamic supremacists... so idk about that, i'd rather let them be standalone by all standards and pair the islamists with the ISIS faction since they're in the same boat), each with multiple groups part of it. Well 5 if you include israel, 6 with turkey and 7 with lebannon but those don't have "issues" with Syria other than they don't want what's in syria coming to them. It's safe to say that if you "clean up" syria, israel, turkey and lebannon will stand down, relaxed and at ease.

How do you clear them up? Idk. I'm not a military genious. I assume that there is a method to do so.

That's why you implement a parliamentary republic with 2 chambers of parliament and mixed member representation. It's what many european countries that are parliamentary republics have.
Not all sunni arabs in Syria are extremists. Out of the 2 mil refugees, a lot of them are sunnis... a lot are christians who escaped massacres by the islamists or alawites who fled knowing what's coming. But the sunnis who fled the violence are not the extremists. I mean, ok, I get the concern and I share it.... even if sunnis aren't extremists they can be easily coopted by islamists to vote for islamists... as it happened in Egypt. Not all the people who voted for Morsi were islamists, but they were seduced by the sunnis... so yeah.

Alternatively, you do what the french did with the syrian mandate. You split it up in 3-4 countries for stability reasons and keep the sunnis in their own country, the christians in their own and the alawites in their own... you get the problem of the kurds then.. what to do about them... who knows.... you give them their own country. I don't know.

I'm not claiming to have all the answers or the right answer, i'm just saying, that the obvious answers between picking one of either side that has a chance to win is the wrong answer...

EDIT: It's all islams' fault really. Well, not islam, islam itself is just a stupid religion, but the followers of islam are for the most part either the problem or enablers of the problem to exist. Very few are fighting actively for moderation and for reformation of islam. Yes, not all the muslims are bad, but they enable the existence of a culture that promotes extremism and violence, whether they are active enablers or not. Being passive is not enough in such situations, being active against extremism is needed.

When Christianity in western europe "reformed", not particularly speaking about the reformist religions, but as how the relation between church and state changed, it was because people stopped being enablers of the dominant relationship between church and state. They wanted something else, someone brought it to the table, and people fought for it, in different places at different periods. Now islam doesn't have to come up with it's own "renaissance" or "enlightenment", there is already a model that exists in the world. Just adopt it for islam. I know it's 1000 years behind Christianity in this regard but it doesn't have to go through 1000 years, it can leap over quite a few centuries because there is a working model for a new relationship in society between church, state and the people.

This all goes back to Obama going out on a limb and claiming the US would strike Syria when he didn't have the congressional numbers to authorize it. He then was at the mercy of the Russian who saved his ass by brokering a "deal" that neutered Obama and the US. Now, the Russians and Syrians are poking Kerry and Obama in the eye again, daring them to do something about it.

Say what you want about Bush 2, but there wasn't a country or leader in the world, particularly in the Middle East, who didn't know for a fact that when President Bush spoke he meant exactly what he said - he didn't bluff.

I am no friend of Obama foreign policy. But in the case of Syria the decision seems to have been made early on to leave the solution to the neighborhood and Russia. The us would help its allies but would not do the lifting. That was fine.
Pity the Obama people didn't keep to the background and allow the EU, Russians and Arabs the limelight.

;)

Here is what makes up the FSA and SNC/STNC.....that we know of and from just Basic Wiki. Which wouldn't have anything that's has taken place recently.

Opposition groups in Syria took a new turn in 2011 during the Syrian civil war as they united to form the Syrian National Council (SNC), which has received significant international support and recognition as a partner for dialogue. The Syrian National Council has been recognised or supported in some capacity by at least 17 member states of the United Nations, with three of those (France, United Kingdom and the United States) being permanent members of the Security Council.

A new opposition umbrella group — the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces — was formed in November 2012 and has gained recognition as the "legitimate representative of the Syrian people" by the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (CCASG) and as a "representative of aspirations of Syrian people" by the Arab League.

The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces is a coalition of opposition groups in the Syrian civil war. It formed on 11 November 2012 at a conference of opposition groups held in Doha, Qatar. It includes organisations such as the SNC. Islamic preacher Moaz al-Khatib serves as the president of the coalition, Riad Seif and Suheir Atassi were elected vice presidents. Mustafa Sabbagh is the coalition's secretary-general.

The Syrian National Council, a coalition of Syrian opposition groups based in Istanbul, formed in 2011 during the Syrian civil war. Key people include chairman as of 2013 George Sabra, and former chairmen Burhan Ghalioun and Abdulbaset Sieda.

Muslim Brotherhood: Islamist party founded in 1930. The brotherhood was behind the Islamic uprising in Syria between 1976 until 1982. The party is banned in Syria and membership became a capital offence in 1980. The régime of Bashar al Assad, and others[who?], have accused the Muslim Brotherhood of being key players in the Syrian uprising that escalated into a civil war. Other sources have described the group as having "risen from the ashes", "resurrected itself" to be a dominant force in the uprising. Current leader is Ali Sadreddine Al-Bayanouni.....snip~

The factions change their allied relationships; though we know the basic outlines. I do not see how you can implement any parliamentary ( other otherwise) type of government.
What does the Syrian army want? Will the Islamists accept less then an Islamic state? The jihadists-are they willing to lay down arms?
How about the regional powers - will they stop funding/sending fighters?

The best analogy I can come up with is a boiling cauldron of internecine hate and willingness to die for a 'cause'.
Any transitional gov't wouldn't have a chance, unless we got the regional players and the Russians to enforce a peaceful transition.
Just don't see it happening while everyone is trying to leverage their advantages; much less agree to cooperate

Well.....I think Kerry wants to get back at Russia for making him look like the Putz he is.....and always was. Lavrov must be chuckling as he has Kerry running around in circles now.

Which no matter what way one looks at it.....that's not good for us.

We should just stay out of the whole mess. All we will end up with, if we go in, is dead americans and everyone hating us. Personally im tired of the "nation building" both parties of the government seem to flock to. If America wishes to help others thats fine, but we need to get our own house in order first. We have Obama on one side wanting someone friendly to him in charge and Russia wanting Assad who is friendly to Putin.....the only difference between the two is who they will kill while running Syria.

I don't understand what's lame about it at all.

- The US doesn't like Assad.

- Kerry is claiming Russia is supporting Assad.

- Russia is supporting Assad.

- Kerry makes comments decrying it.

It's all very normal. He's the Secretary of State. What's lame about this?

Heya OCO. Well, pretty much the rest of the planet knows we have been supporting the Sauds ambitions and the Rebels/Terrorists too.

That's whats why its so lame.

Kerry throwing a temper tantrum because his diplomacy isn't working. Standby, we'll see more Kerry outbursts as his foreign policy agenda continues to unravel. Next up, Israeli talks with Palestinians, then the nuclear deal.

I do wish they would be successful. But they don't realize that imposing will doesn't happen with words and cocktail parties in this region of the world. Power, force, money is the only language this region understands. If we are unwilling to use these tools, then we should get out instead of tarnishing our image abroad with methods proven to be useless.

Uh...so? What does that have to do with anything? Are you trying to imply it's hypocritical or something? Then all foreign policy and relations would be. Just seems like normal interaction to me.

It has to do with the political posturing over bringing peace to the ME.....US Foreign Policy concerning the ME by Both sides was wrong, from the original take with the assessment that we can do business with those that are so called and self professed Moderates.

Оur guys will die for abstract ideas of democracy and good, аgain? We did not get cheap oil from Iraq and uranium ore from Afghanistan. From Syria we will get only coffins. We have to maintain low-level conflict there, which will deplete the strength of both sides.

...what does that have to do with what he said? Like, you're seriously upset over...nothing. This is nothing. A total nonstory.

Yeah, its a non story other than on Political merits of what Team Obama has already stated.....as like I said. Assad is winning. So he don't even have to respond back. Also since Lavrov isn't to concerned over the matter.

If the US was arming a dictator that slaughtered 100k civilians, gassed the capital and continues the onslaught, would the outrage by some be different?

First, Kerry badmouths the Indonesians...now he's badmouthing the Russians. What's the deal? Does he want to get the whole world pissed off at the US?

If you ask me, and I understand no one is, it is time for a tactical retreat from this region. Currently, our foreign policy here is as fractured as the region itself. We should retreat to the max extent possible, allow the factional blood being spilled to coagulate into coherent ideology, borders, and political situations that we can then re-engage with, with a coherent foreign policy of our own. A tactical retreat to effect a strategic aim if you will. Containment of terrorism from this region should be our only concern in the near term.

Russia wants to insert itself again in the ME? Be our guest as far as I'm concerned. I'm happy to hand over this mess to the Russians.

None of this makes any sense. Kerry just pointed out that Russia is helping Assad and the US doesn't like Assad. That's it.
