Get a dog, name it Chopper. As for infection, it can certainly be handled without a hospital. I had a 2nd/ 3rd degree burn that side on my leg from a drunken night of burnouts on a motorcycle. ended up dropping it on my leg. Ouch. The skin pealed off like cheese off a slice of pizza. It took almost three months to heal. In the beginning a 4x4 inch gauze pad did not quite cover it. Not only did I not go to the hospital, I did the debriding myself as well, and near the end had to shave the wound because when the hair started to grow back it was causing the bandages to stick. It was summer in Chicago, I was working in an auto shop and with the exception of the bike owner (who was my roommate) nobody even knew about it until it was nearly healed. But then I have been known to stitch myself up and set my own broken fingers so I may be outside the norm there.
