Its a fun thread based on a quirky study. There is no malice in any of the insults being thrown around. In fact many of them are self-deprecating.

It is widely frowned on in various areas of the country, or viewed with mixed emotions.

Its been my experience that the further North you go, the higher the liquor store and bar density. In Arkansas there is only a handful of wet counties. You can drive nearly a hundred miles in parts of the state without being able to legally buy a beer. In contrast, I have been in Northern Minnesota towns of 500 people with 4 bars. Part of that are the differences in the predominate Christian denominations with a Southern state like Arkansas having a lot of Baptists (Southern, Missionary, Independent, Freewill...everything but American Baptist), Pentecostals, and various other Evangelicals...none of which are big on drinking. While a state like Minnesota is full of Lutherans, Episcopalians and Catholics...all of which are really big on drinking. I think its also just that when its bitterly cold out for months on end what else can you do but drink.

Yup. I still remember my old preacher saying "Whiskeypalians" instead of Episcopalians, heavy on the disdain.

I figured out that the Book pretty clearly has nothing against moderate libation, no matter what Mr. Welch may have convinced the 19th century church fathers to believe and pass on.

But I still can't say hello to anyone in the liquor store.

But I only get that stuff because here in Mississippi, if you ask for a micro-brew, they'll give you a thimble full of Bud...and wine? Down here, boxed wine is considered high-class. That's okay, though - in a few days I'll be back in Puget Sound where hop-heavy micro-brews are ubiquitous, and saying the words "cabernet sauvignon" won't get one punched for sounding like a socialist Francophile.
