European Parliament wants full recognition of Kosovo

(ANSAmed) - STRASBOURG, JANUARY 16 - The European Parliament has issued another appeal to Greece, Spain, Slovakia, Romania and Cyprus to recognize Kosovo as soon as possible, as they are the only EU nations not to have done so yet. A resolution passed Thursday on the issue with 485 in favor, 94 against and 40 abstentions. The head of delegation of the Austrian Greens in the European Parliament, Ulrike Lunacek, said that the broad support for the report ''sends a strong message that independent Kosovo's future is in its integration into the EU''. She noted that, however, ''the EU's positive impact on Kosovo has been repeatedly weakened by internal EU division'', as five countries have not yet recognized Pristina. MEPs say that the first local and national elections, held in November and December, marked ''an enormous step forward for democracy in Kosovo''. In the report, the European Parliament said that the agreement between Pristina and Belgrade implies responsibility on both sides to push ahead with the reforms necessary for integration into the EU. EULEX's future handover in Kosovo will have to be gradual and based on real progress, the European MPs added, asking the EU to speed up the lifting of visa restrictions for Kosovo nationals in the Schengen area.

This is so non-MSM that I barely found this source known to our local news ever since day before yesterday. Remaining five not to recognize us are: Pete EU, Rainman, Greece, Slovakia, and Cyprus.

Spain was such an unexpected disappointment. We went to Spain and fought Franco and gave our blood for their cause. In return they cannot even give their ink and sign a recognition paper! Whatever happened between us Pete?

Romania... Such a vague position towards our concerns. Was a strong support for our literacy during the Ottoman empire. The Ottoman's did not want us elaborated from illiteracy and would close press offices that would stamp the alphabet and various intellectual writings in Albanian. We use to press from Bukuresht instead for years.

Then when NATO allies went against Milosevic's crime campaign Russia intervened and was ready with 20 thousand troops to be deployed. If this were to happen you would have a Syrian situation here in Dardania also. But Romania closed all airports to Russia's military. This made the dictator furious.

You would think that they are by our side and would now seize the deal for good. Yet when it comes to recognition things just stop and we are not even an issue there. Strange!

Not so strange given these countries' present crises. Of course these would take precedence.

It's only a matter of time. Historical back-biting and recriminations don't help.

I take offense to this. I am not a country. I am a citizen of my country and yet you hold it against me that my country doesn't recognize Kosovo? What is wrong with you? Do you think I'm the president of Romania? I'm not. Do you think I'm a politician in Romania? I'm not. I'm just guy who works as a web developer, trying to earn a living, live and learn, and engage in online discussions on the forum. I don't control public policy. Let me put it this way, me recognizing Kosovo doesn't do jack **** because I don't matter in diplomatic arrangements.

Now on to discussing the reality.
Romania has a great deal of working relationships and dealings with Serbia. We share a border, trade deals and we share the greatest hydroelectric power plan in Europe outside of Russia's hydro power plants, the Iron Gates I and II on the Danube river. These are all things that are currently going on between Romania and Serbia at the moment. I assume that for all these things, Romania doesn't want to harm its friendship with Serbia and recognizing Kosovo is going to do just that, cripple it. Because Romania has had a good working relationship with Serbia these past years, several things got accomplished including recently (last year), on choice education of Romanian language in Serbia for the rather large Romanian communities that live there especially in the NE of Serbia.

Does this mean that Romania is against Kosovo? No. There has been no hostile action and a great deal of support for the albanian people from Romania as you have correctly pointed out. Historically, there is no bad blood but quite a lot of good. But the big picture today has a lot of things to consider, including what I presented above.

I personally, can sympathize with your position. I do because I know the feeling. History has been quite unkind to both albanians and romanians and for that reason and more, I have empathy. But again, my personal emotions or feelings don't count. In the real world of foreign policy, economic and geopolitical interests rule. Now in the press here, there really isn't that big of a discussion on the nature of Kosovo and it's situation. Maybe with this, now that the EU is pushing for this, it will become a hot topic in the public discourse. If so, I will relay to you, should it be of interest, what the position of our governing officials is. So far, our president boycotted all events where the kosovo delegation has gone to push for a recognition agenda.

No offense intended. Actually I know your position on this because we spoke earlier there was a bit of a tease there also if you do not mind .

The only Romanian around these parts in DP is you. I believe when that is the case it is implied that you get to speak on behalf of your country. You may not agree with me on this but no problem.

Thanks for letting me know if this comes back at being an issue north over there. The issue of Romanian as a chosen language for instance is quite knew for me.

You are right. Still, one can express their emotions cannot they?

I am absolutely baffled as to why anyone would oppose this. Serbia and Kosovo are just not meant together. The people of Kosovo have spoken, and that should be respected. Good luck to you.

Re: European Parliament wants full recognition of Kosovo

Things are loosening up. Here is a recap from our prime minister:

The road to recognition: PM Thaci on statehood, corruption and Kosovo's European dream - YouTube

Among statements worthy of mention are:

"Russia would help Serbia if they recognized Dardania."

"Organ trafficking is pure science fiction."

"We are reaching the required amount of countries that recognizes us enabling us to be in UN and NATO." and many more.

It is 20 minutes. You may check it out.

This follows after a constructive dialogue and public made interview between our Prime Minister and the Serbian prime minister Dacic:

Catherine Ashton in Panel discussion on the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue - YouTube

There are 107 countries that recognized us from the 129 countries required:

Who Recognized Kosova? The Kosovar people thank you - Who Recognized Kosovo and Who Recognizes Kosovo

The minister of foreign offers promises 6 more recognitions from countries worldwide by June. If that is the case we would go up to 113 where only 16 countries remain.

So what I am getting while I address the EU members that did not yet recognize us is this: Relations between us seem to be loosening up a little. Are you sure you want to go down in history as countries that stood by with Serbia (after all it did to us) until the very last day?

We have signed the The Stabilisation and Association Agreement yesterday. It is the first key step for non-EU countries such as ours towards EU membership.
