Helping the NSA could become a crime in Washington State

Providing water and electricity to the National Security Agency in Washington state could soon mean a year of jail time.

In response to national security leaks by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden about the agency, two Washington state lawmakers introduced a bill on Wednesday aimed at denying any help to federal agencies engaging in warrantless electronic surveillance.

Called the “Creating the Fourth Amendment protection act,” the bill would make providing any type of assistance — including “material support,” state funds, and services — a misdemeanor for corporations or person acting as state contractors, and a gross misdemeanor for state employees.

Violating the act could land a state employee up to a year in county jail with a $5,000 fine. In addition, they would lose their job and be barred from public service.

State contractors caught violating the act could face up to 90 days in jail with a $1,000 fine and forever lose the state’s business.

Obviously this is far from law, but interesting.

Obviously that bill would never pass but it's endearing to note that some people still live in a fantasy world full of rainbows and dreams. Somebody wasted a lot of time for nothing

Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The premise is cute though. Gold star for the laugh, Washington.

As noted in the op. however civil rights concerns have little to do with dreams and rainbows.

Everybody agrees that our civil liberties are being violated and it's far worse than people think. The FBI has begun sending letters to local law enforcement to condition them to begin viewing conspiracy theorist as terrorist. I've seen the letter and have a copy of it, so it exist. I'm now labeled a terrorist; fantastic!

My issue with the OP is that their approach is wrong, but noble. I have a better solution that involves a peaceful and civilized, democratic revolution. History has proven that when excessive power is taken by a government, it never relinguishes that power back to the people voluntarily. The people must take back the power by force, but we are not savages. Americans are better than that and a forceful solution isn't necessary. We have elections comming soon and this is our revolution. Stop voting for Republicans and Democrates because they are just thugs in a gang. We need a new independent party that doesn't do the bidding for special interest. An Independent President who has the welfare of the people at heart is the only way our liberties and deficit will be restored and fixed. There is no other solution. The government will not prosecute itself .

I couldn't agree with you more on that. The number of independents is growing we just need a more collective realisation that both parties are contributing to these problems and it IS time to establish a legitimate third party and challenge the two dinosaurs with a wake up call. I'd sure like to see that letter in your possession.

It seems like it could be a nice little way to boot bad eggs out earlier. Orrrr used by people that are switching jobs for whatever reason anyways as a backdoor for escape for betraying trust.

    But prolly mostly loud barking?

I like the idea of it. But I think ISPs, phone companies and other privately owned companies should be banned from storing data and get prison time should they aid the NSA and other spy program. And it should be a felony crime not a misdemeanor crime.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

I have to imagine there are a whole battery of reasons such a measure wouldn't be legal.

I like your sentiment, but in this day and age, they MIGHT be nothing but.
