Phil Robertson is no stranger to controversy. Just days after his anti-gay and racially insensitive comments appeared in GQ magazine, he was temporarily suspended from his popular A&E show "Duck Dynasty." When fans complained, the network reinstated him. Now, he's back in the headlines for a newly surfaced video.

The 2009 footage, which was posted on Youtube, shows the 67-year-old reality TV star speaking at a Christian retreat in Georgia. During the speech, he tells a story about advising a young man to find a good Christian girl and marry her.

“Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road," Robertson said.

He then went on to say that men should wed girls who are young.

“They got to where they're getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting ‘til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry 'em,” Robertson said. “Look, you wait ‘til they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They’ll pick your ducks."

I beg your pardon? Marry 'em young before they reach the ripe old age of 20 and come after your money?

So 2 men/women having consensual sex while both being over 18 is a sin but statutory rape or marrying 15 year old girls is not a sin?

The thing that isn't a crime is a sin and people should not do that but the thing that is a crime is promoted by this bible wielding preacher?

Girls should not be getting married at age 15, men who commit sex with girls of 15 years should be jailed for pedophilia and people who promote such behavior should have their heads examined.

But I am sure that even this kind of thinking will be defended by some because Phil Robertson is speaking from his own experience (marrying his wife when she was 16).

IIRC in Texas parental permission lets one wed at 15. Less than 100 years ago, it was common for a female to marry earlier than that.
Also, IIRC, they (Robersons) didn't have sex until they were married.

And YES it is sinful for 2 men or women....

So? Marrying 15 year old girls might have been normal a 100 years ago but we are not living 100 years ago. Sex with underage girls is statutory rape and promoting this is sinful IMHO, way more sinful than gay people having sex.

And again, even if they were married, she was only 16 and should have never been married at her age.

Attitudes like Robertson about women are a trough back to centuries ago. Women have the right to not be classified as "barefoot and pregnant". Women are no longer just there for having babies but they have the right to have full lives with studying and working away from home if they should choose to do so.

I'm not all in a hubbub over this contrived controversy as many seem to be, BUT, there is some truth to his statements, even if he doesn't realize it himself. Of course, it needs pointing out that as usual, you (The left) misunderstood what Robertson was actually conveying in his message, but color me shocked that you read what you wanted to read.

Sure, the great and wise Phil Robertson is always being misunderstood by the "left".

IMHO, there is no misunderstanding the comment:

Statistically, girls who marry younger (in their teens) have longer marriages than those who marry in their twenties. Not sure why, but it might have something to do with the prefrontal cortex not yet being hard wired? In Phil's time, men used to court girls, they asked permission to marry, and their "roles" were clearly defined. These days, courting is replaced with hooking up, and permission to marry is rarely required, not to mention, women today have no concept of being a home maker. (Note these are general statements and vary depending on region, but I'd wager they are mostly accurate).

I know perspective and context mean nothing when someone stumbles upon something like this, but I'll add some just the same.

You mean women have matured and wised up since his youth. Women do not have to have a concept of being a home maker, men and women should together create happy homes, some women may choose to take the majority of that role upon them but in our modern society that should not longer be necessary. Men should take just as big of a role in that, especially if they both work full time.

A man and woman should structure their household however they choose.

In 1997 the law changed in Texas .

Licenses may be issued to anyone over eighteen. If you are between 16 & 18 you need either parental consent or a court order (you have to notify your parent or guardian to give them a chance to appear at the court hearing). If you are younger than 16 you must have a court order or some formal legal emanicipation (court order making you an adult for most purposes, including marriage).

So, getting married at 15 isn't legal with just parents concent, but having parents consent might encourage a judge to allow the marriage. Of course I'd consider such parents nucking futz...

choose to when they are old enough to make an informed decision about such a thing, a 15 year old girl is not old enough to make such a decision. They will most likely be more docile and accommodating to the wish of their spouse to be only a house wife, pregnant within the first 6 months and in that manner binding her to the house for all of her adult life.

And the judge equally nuts, I think any person who says to men that they need to marry them young is sending an incredibly wrong message to these men.

I thought that sounded like a joke...

I don't even recommend people marry in their 20's, most of the people I knew who got married in or just after college are now divorced. How can you know who you want to spend the rest of your life with at an age where you don't even truly know who you are and what life you want?

And you wonder why there's so many Gay people running around.

Messed up home life. 8)

There aren't so many gay people running around, especially not compared to straight people. And gays are not created by messed up home lives but are a combination of genetics, biology and family. You cannot turn somebody gay by having it grown up in a messed up home life if the other factors are not already in play.

someone that it would be a joke, if it weren't for the little fact that he married his wife when she was aged 16 herself. I do not think it is a joke but that he is serious in this opinion.

Obviously you've never dated any Louisiana gals. Y'all got many coonass chicks in Holland? The stop being docile and accomodating around age 8...lol!

They've been together for 47 years, too. Can't really knock the dude; he got it right.

What attitude? He said it was a joke. What part of that don't you understand? This is how, "I can see Russia from my house", become fact.

He's been married for 47 years. His attitude towards women must be damn good.

Well since y'all insist on connecting issues, I'm going to connect the feminist movement to the explosion in people who have gender problems and thinking they're homosexual.

That my friend is where the train fell off the track and caused a messed up home life.

People from his generation are much more likely to stay together no matter what.

It is not the feminists who caused the problem but the arrogant men who wanted to keep living like half a century ago and were unwilling to change their old fashioned ways. Men have been oppressing women for centuries and the problem is that men were/are unwilling to evolve into more equal partnerships.

I didn't mention what caused feminism only that feminism caused these other issues.

And it might have something to do with the fact that yanking a 15 yr old girl out of school, usually followed by a quick impregnation, means that she will be unable to support herself or her children in the future, because she doesn't have the education or ability to do so. Teaching young girls that they must rely on men to care for them for their entire lives might be Phil's idea of utopia, but it sure as hell isn't mine.

In Phil's time, men used to court girls, they asked permission to marry, and their "roles" were clearly defined. "Phil's time" was in the freaking 1960's... you know, hippies, free love, bra burning? He was not a product of the Victorian Age, for god sake. I was around in the 1960's, and believe me, women had the same hopes and dreams for their future then as they do now.

As for your statement about women today having no concept of being a home maker, I guess you'd have to describe what your concept of a home maker might be. If it's toiling from dusk to dawn polishing, mopping, cleaning toilets, changing diapers, getting meals on the table for menfolk, washing dishes and scrubbing the kitchen then bending over for a quick, perfunctory poke before falling into an exhausted sleep in order to get up and do the entire thing all over again, day after day for the rest of her life... then yes, yes I can agree that most of "today's women" would prefer a more varied and interesting life... including the joy of educating themselves, preparing for a time when the children are grown enough that they can actually do something that fulfills them as a person, rather than being just a cross between an unpaid maid and a free whore for their entire lives.
