LONDON (AP) — A German magazine lifted the lid on the operations of the National Security Agency's hacking unit Sunday, reporting that American spies intercept computer deliveries, exploit hardware vulnerabilities, and even hijack Microsoft's internal reporting system to spy on their targets.
Der Spiegel's revelations relate to a division of the NSA known as Tailored Access Operations, or TAO, which is painted as an elite team of hackers specializing in stealing data from the toughest of targets.

Citing internal NSA documents, the magazine said Sunday that TAO's mission was "Getting the ungettable," and quoted an unnamed intelligence official as saying that TAO had gathered "some of the most significant intelligence our country has ever seen."

The NSA doesn't just rely on James Bond-style spy gear, the magazine said. Some of the attacks described by Der Spiegel exploit weaknesses in the architecture of the Internet to deliver malicious software to specific computers. Others take advantage of weaknesses in hardware or software distributed by some of the world's leading information technology companies, including Cisco Systems, Inc. and China's Huawei Technologies Ltd., the magazine reported.
Der Spiegel cited a 2008 mail order catalog-style list of vulnerabilities that NSA spies could exploit from companies such as Irvine, California-based Western Digital Corp. or Round Rock, Texas-based Dell Inc. The magazine said that suggested the agency was "compromising the technology and products of American companies."

One of the most striking reported revelations concerned the NSA's alleged ability to spy on Microsoft Corp.'s crash reports, familiar to many users of the Windows operating system as the dialogue box which pops up when a game freezes or a Word document dies. The reporting system is intended to help Microsoft engineers improve their products and fix bugs, but Der Spiegel said the NSA was also sifting through the reports to help spies break into machines running Windows. One NSA document cited by the magazine appeared to poke fun at Microsoft's expense, replacing the software giant's standard error report message with the words: "This information may be intercepted by a foreign sigint (signals intelligence) system to gather detailed information and better exploit your machine."

More and more information coming out about the NSA (AKA Big Brother). Sickening what they are doing and absolutely insane that they have this power.

Not surprising. They've been caught spying in several other instances, and imo this only serves to monitor the increasing malcontent in this country. Unfortunately, I don't think the NSA has much to worry about in that regard. Either that, or they're doing a fine job covering it up-

Big Brother? Where did it say anything about it was being used against Americans? Insane that they have this power? What, would you prefer that Al Queda or a group of hackers have it? The hackers do anyway. Why is it you think we should not spy on or enemies or other countries inorder to have the intelligence data needed to defend ourselves?

Very little of what is in that article is much of a surprise, or even news. Most of those vulnerabilities were well know, some for a very longtime. Cisco has been in the news several times about their vulnerabilities. Windows has been know to have security holes for as long as there has been windows. They didn't even go into all the vulnerabilities of Linksys and other routers in common use.

What, would you prefer that Al Queda or a group of hackers have it?

Well if al-Qa'ida might try to hurt Americans then by all means, tear up the Constitution and let's give the government free reign to do whatever they want to 'keep us safe".

Again, where in the article and information presented does it ever say that the NSA employees these methods against US Citizens?

Also, nice selective editing. Care to respond to the rest of my previous post?

In this specific article it doesnt mention much about the NSA being used against Americans. The only mention was that about Microsoft. But the NSA is used against Americans.....

Yes Al Queda will have the capabilities and billions upon billions of dollars the NSA posses and the man power and knowledge. Get real man.

Where exactly did i say we shouldnt spy on our enemies?

I was just about to start a thread about this very thing over here on this subforum, and then I fortunately found this one first.

Actually, many of these vulnerabilities have been known for years and yes, many third world hackers already know about them.

You didn't specifically, but you will have to forgive those who get that impression from "Sickening what they are doing and absolutely insane that they have this power."

The capabilities the NSA has? No they dont.

Ubantu..Linux? i wonder how easy those are to exploit.

Depends on which exploits. The ones in Windows cannot be used against Linux. The ones attacking cisco is actually deep in the internet architecture not on individual systems. The western digital I haven't actually heard of before and would have to look it up.

Most exploits are very difficult in linux due to the strict separation of root and user. Inorder to alter or add anything at the system level, an alert will pop up prompting root password. If you have not specifically done something to initiate an install, then don't authorize it.

I like Unbuntu, been using it for about 6 years or more now. I liked the old Gnome II desktop better than the Unity. So I switched over to Xunbuntu (Ubuntu with XFCE4 gui). After getting used to it, the XFCE desktop is no where near as annoying as the Gnome Unity one. I would still prefer to have a root account instead of sudo, but not possible atm under Ubuntu. Would also like a non-gui boot option but can still kill X at anytime if I really need to work without X server being up.

Seriously?

Have you been living in a cave for the last 13 years?

The ACLU, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the Electronic Privacy Information Center have been suing the NSA and the federal government more generally (and winning suits) over electronic spying on Americans for the better part of the past three years.

This article may not say anything about spying on Americans, but numerous lawsuits prove that the NSA is spying on Americans.

Not to mention the fact that you'd have to be some kind of idiot lemming to not accept on the face of things that when the NSA is tapping the telephone and Internet records of pretty much all Americans that someone is spying on Americans.

Also, nice selective editing. Care to respond to the rest of my previous post?

There's no real point in responding to the rest of your comments.

Once a guy plays the al-Qa'ida card you know that he's as irrational as a guy playing the race card, or the Nazi card.

"Oh no!!! The boogey man might get us!!! Please Mr. Government, keep us safe from ourselves!!!!"

So I should be commenting on things not presented in the thread and OP instead of responding to it?

Frankly, for the most part, I don't give a damned. It is impossible for them to provide human monitoring of the worlds information/voice networks. While they can do key word/phrase searches electronically, they are not going to waste their time unless something draws their attention to a particular individual. Unless you are for some reason doing something to draw their attention, there is absolutely no reason to be paranoid about it.

Hell, if in the last two years they haven't been at my door for some of the things I've said on this forum or searches I've done, then they are not paying very good attention, or they know there is not enough there to take action. If I don't know, I don't need to worry about it because they could do a complete search of all my data history and my computer (assuming they actually could hack into a Linux system and access a drive with triple 256K+ encryption) and search my data, they would get nothing of value nor waste their time to constantly monitor.

So all these people so paranoid about it are either A) paranoid or B) doing something they shouldn't be.

I don't worry about the NSA. I would be much more concerned about hackers. But then, I keep any valuable information on the encrypted drive and only mount it when I need it. Other than that, when installs ask for business I always put in Bob's Whore House and if it needs wants email address, I put in ****you@****off.com I don't store banking or payment passwords or any valuable passwords on my system and I always log off of important systems when leaving the page.
