The real reason why the U.S. is suddenly so interested:
South Sudan oil fields could be targeted, says Sudan
We don't do anything unless it serves us.
Oh for the love of god. No it isn't.
We aren't 'suddenly' interested in South Sudan. We were a key mediator and supporting party in bringing the independence referendum to a conclusion and have maintained development and security links to the new country since its inception. Furthermore sending troops to secure our embassy and assist in evacuations is one of the oldest international roles of our military. There is nothing exceptional about this except that the international community has taken a more aggressive interest in humanitarian disasters than it has in the past with the Central African Republican, S. Sudan, and the slew of West African interventions standing as examples.
Not to mention that S. Sudan only has production of a quarter million (if that) barrels a day of which very little that is contracted ends up in US markets.
