US Sending Troops to South Sudan

The real reason why the U.S. is suddenly so interested:

South Sudan oil fields could be targeted, says Sudan

We don't do anything unless it serves us.

Oh for the love of god. No it isn't.

We aren't 'suddenly' interested in South Sudan. We were a key mediator and supporting party in bringing the independence referendum to a conclusion and have maintained development and security links to the new country since its inception. Furthermore sending troops to secure our embassy and assist in evacuations is one of the oldest international roles of our military. There is nothing exceptional about this except that the international community has taken a more aggressive interest in humanitarian disasters than it has in the past with the Central African Republican, S. Sudan, and the slew of West African interventions standing as examples.

Not to mention that S. Sudan only has production of a quarter million (if that) barrels a day of which very little that is contracted ends up in US markets.

It's easier to do 'alright' when you only have to concern yourself with maintaining a proper standard of living for 12-15% of the population while exploiting the labor and resources of the rest of the country.

Now the living standard is crap for 100% of the population.

The answer to Fenton's question: too much Communism.

South Africa could be doing much better, and the ANC is corrupt and inept, but economic performance and the spread of wealth has without a doubt improved since the abolition of Apartheid.

close the embassy, get all Americans out of the country, and never go back.

after doing this, repeat the process with every other problem nation in the world. no need to have embassies there.

60,000 prople have been murdered since Mandella was elected. All they did was trade one bad system for another bad system; from the frying pan to the fire.

Evac an African country? Obama would never live it down. He has to jump on this oppurtunity to prove his blackness.

That is switching arguments. In economic terms GDP growth rates are higher than under Apartheid, per capita income rates are higher, access to education has increased, etc. It isn't a 'different system' they went from a racialist fascist state to democratic rule however flawed it may be it is a farcry from the system that forcibly impoverished and disenfranchised an entire people.

OK. and what are we supposed to do, if the place really starts ethinc/tribal (not sure) to come apart?

I'm just really tired of the constant drain on the US/UN forces. Better to be a part of the UN, but what is our interest?
Was it even a good idea to seperate from Sudan? Why must we be in the middle of these civil wars??

Though officially separating from Sudan in mid 2011 and becoming the newest country on the planet (193rd), it instantly became one of the poorest, most uneducated, corrupt and politically unstable nations upon independence. Kiir’s government was just ranked the fifth most corrupt in the world by Transparency International’s 2013 Corruption Perceptions Index.
The country has been cursed with violence for decades. The South fought a 21-year civil war against the North from 1983 to 2004, resulting in roughly two millions deaths. A comprehensive peace agreement was signed in 2005 in neighboring Nairobi, Kenya, calling for independence six years later
South Sudan May Be Slipping Into Civil War

Understand it's easy to look back and criticize, but we gotta learn not to get involved in these protracted civil wars.

Oh what do I think should happen? I think an international safety zone for refugees should be established in S. Sudan if the violence does not come under control soon. There is historical precedent for this and I believe it could save tens of thousands of lives.

lulz

OOOOOH I SEE ME A CHANCE HERE TO REITERATE THAT I DON'T LIKE OBAMA HANG ON HERE IT COMES

I HATE ME SOME OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

seriously, man. really?

we need to get the hell out of a lot of these places and never go back, regardless of which half of the duopoly controls the white house.

its a simple answer, having african run africa is like having a bunch of 10 year olds running the grade school they attend, if anybody wants to argue just show me one african country that isnt a complete and utter chaotic and violent mess.and if you want you want, can throw haiti on to that pile also.

Libya was doing really good until we decided to help them out. We've helped a lot of dysfunctional Nations become dysfunctional.

maybe, we do want to help refugees.
It looks like the whole idea of investing in an unstable country was just a bad idea - maybe the Chinese can pull it off since they do not care about refugess/wars.
They are strickly there (Africa) for resources.

I'm oblecting to this whole idea of dividing up/sewing together nations by outside forces (as you said the US/ Brits? had an instrumental role).
Enough. If there are internal divisons, simply cutting a part of a country off to form a new one, when it's incapable of self governance.

I reall the balkanization of Yugoslavia, and there was a role in that case to play.
Not so much here. I dunno..I'm just really tires of all this, but i suppose 1 set of parameters isn't a hard and fast rule.

The ANC is no better than Apartheid. To say it's better because it isn't racist--which is highly debatable--isn't acceptable.

Investing in unstable countries is one critical to help bring about stability which in turn facilitates development. More relevantly these unexploited markets and resource nodes are the places you need to invest in to generate the greatest amount of reward commensurate with your investment. Nascent and emerging markets are where fortunes are made.

well then do it like the Chinese, whom do not seem to get caught up in these things.

When did I say you like Obama?

When did I say we shouldn't pack up and haul ass?

Why are you totally incapable if understanding my comments explaining why I believe Obama won't bail?

Obama!s autheticity has been in question since he threw his hat in the ring. This is his big chance to prove he's an authentic black man.

It isn't debatable. South Africa sucks, but it was not a better country under Apartheid. It was only better for those who weren't under the boot of a fascist military machine.

I never said it was better under Apartheid.

They get caught up in them it just isn't frequently reported. There have been hundreds of Chinese citizens killed in developing countries during times of instability.

I agree with letting people take care of themselves. The US does not have the luxury of spending money and lives dealing with other peoples problems right now. Theres 6 billion other people and a few hundred other countries that can go get involved if they want. And any americans who want to help can go join the Peace Corps or whatever.

OK.
I would imagine the Chinese look at that more of a cost of doing business, rather then any kind of imperative to stabilize.

Why would he want or need to do that? He looks black to me.

As for embassies in every hellhole, I stand by my earlier statement : close them.

Actually, he's only half black. Hence the reason he feels the need to prove his blackness.
