Multivitamins Are a Waste of Money, Doctors Say

Case Is Closed: Multivitamins Are a Waste of Money, Doctors Say

People should stop wasting their money on dietary supplements, some physicians said today, in response to three large new studies that showed most multivitamin supplements are ineffective at reducing the risk of disease, and may even cause harm.
The dietary-supplement industry maintains that for many Americans, diet alone may not provide the necessary vitamins they need daily, Miller said."The industry tries to create the impression that we are deficient, but randomized trials show that we are not all deficient and we don't benefit from supplements," Miller said, adding that clinical trials include people with varied diets from the general population.
So most of the "information" about how much we "need" vitamins really only comes from the people/corporations who make the vitamins???

So the importance of vitamins is just one big fat lie perpetrated by the people who make the most money off them????

Next thing we'll hear is that we don't actually need to drink eight, 8 ounce glasses of water a day because we're all living in a state of dehydration.

Well doctors perpetrated that "lie" for many many years. So everyone thought vitamins were good for you. We just didn't know. I had a urologist tell me once that drinking all that water is bogus, and actually works your kidneys more than necessary. Drink when you're thirsty, is what he told me.

I've suspected this for years, if only because the alternative medicine crowd is almost always full of ****. However, just in case, I take probiotics, fish oil, and B12 daily. Oh, and vitamin C, because the lozenges taste like candy. Makes me feel like I'm doing something, and probably does little more than that.

In the words of comedic genius Tim Minchin:

    "By definition, (I begin)
    Alternative medicine, (I continue)
Is either not been proved to work,
Or been proved, not to work.
Do you know what they call
    'Alternative Medicine'
    That's been proved to work?

Also - the vast majority of whatever you take - you dispose of through urination.

So you're paying money to have a different color pee.

If you get all the vitamins and minerals you need from the food you ingest then good for you. I don't so i take a multivitamin and calcium supplement.

Physicians practice medicine. Think about that.

They've been saying it for years, that there's no proof that they work and it's better to work harder to get those vitamins in your food.

They probably have some affect, esp. the minerals, rather than vitamins, but the cost is $$$$$.

Some vitamins are water-soluble, so you take them frequently. Like Vitamin C. I occasionally take it if I'm around sick people and if I do, I take it throughout the day.

Vitamin E however, is fat-soluble and your body stores that longer. Salmon oil, an omega3 fatty acid (not a vitamin) also stays longer in your system.

Re: Multivitamins Are a Waste of Money, Doctors Say

My doctor has said this for years...until he suggested I take a certain vitamin. My conclusions: vitamins are needed but most are already in the food we eat in sufficient levels. If not, they will have you take some at their direction; most likely D, B12, Omega 3 and C in that order if at all. Ultimately vitamins are pills and doctors like to oversee and direct all pills you take.

Not a good idea to take certain vitamins as some can be toxic at high levels. Some can lead to heart disease. Some can cause loss of vision. Some can cause liver damage. Always consult with your doctor regarding pills you take. The health nut at the health food/vitamin store is not a doctor.
