WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced his delegates to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. And, in what may be a thumb in the eye to Russian President Vladimir Putin over his crackdown on gay rights, two of Obama's delegates are openly gay.Billie Jean King, the tennis legend, and Caitlin Cahow, an Olympic medalist in women’s ice hockey, are both part of the U.S. delegation. Both are out lesbians.
Another member of the U.S. delegation, figure skating Olympic medalist Brian Boitano, routinely declines to answer questions about his sexuality, saying "everybody's got their own path" to discovering who they are.
Others in the delegation include University of California President Janet Napolitano, the former Homeland Security secretary; U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul; White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Nabors; Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, and speed skating Olympic medalists Bonnie Blair and Eric Heiden.
In what may be another slight to the Russian president, Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the opening ceremony. This marks the first time since the 2000 Summer Olympic Games that a president, vice president, first lady or former president won't be part of the opening ceremony.

Hell yea!
Give Putin the diplomatic middle finger!
Love this move Obama! Great move!

Well gee - there's a surprise - openly gay Olympic delegates representing the US or any western nation has never happened, right - must be another one of Obama's firsts, right? Obama should come out and go himself, or at least Hillary could end the "suspense" - those would be the boldest moves.

I think the Russian law is idiotic, but so is a US President and the fools who follow him thinking this is a bold move.

Both people in this thread have described it as a "great move" not a "bold move."

If you want to argue against a straw man do it front of your mirror

Wow I can't believe you look to a dictator and happily claim he's "one of us"

Putin's a giant ****, but the guy knows how to craft an image

Things I'm learning this year.

Nelson Mandela = the enemy.

Vladimir Putin = one of us.

Clearly Mandela needed more shirtless horse riding shots to appeal to the american RW

Well, this should clear up a lot of my evenings this winter, now that I don't have to watch the Olympics. Scary that I have more respect for the leader of Russia than I do the POTUS. Never thought I'd ever say that.

Pat Buchanan's blog. Seriously. This is what you bring to the table.

Dude, we did not need Pat Buchanan to point out the obvious. I tend to agree with you but don't get all extreme and look like those other guys you usually speak to. You can't defend, if you like your health care plan **** and Syria.

I don't see Putin taking selfy pics with gorgeous blonds with his wife sitting next to him. Who's the dummy? If Obammy ever took his shirt off in public we would declare Gandhi is resurrected.

I laughed. A nicely done diplomatic snub and a wonderful bit of Trollface

Billie Jean King is an excellent representative for Obama and his values.

Huzzah for pettiness! Those gay people will show Putin alright!

Oh, my goodness Tigger, that's just awful!

How will NBC ever survive without your patronage?

You're not going to watch the Olympics because Billie Jean King is going to the Opening Ceremonies? OK....

I'm not surprised that you have respect for Putin, he's your kind of leader - very authoritarian. No wonder you like him.

Come on...its a figure skater and a female tennis player. Even Putin recognizes that it would be far more difficult finding reps in those fields that WERENT homosexual. (I know...right? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Gay figure skaters????? WTF??????)

NBC doesn't give a shart.

No. I'm not going to watch the Olympics because the only nation whose athletes I could root for will be represented by a bunch of individuals with no morals or character, who are there solely for the purpose of expressing that they have no morals or character. I cannot support that. Sorry.

He has his positive qualities, unlike the current POTUS.

So you can't root for the individual athletes themselves? They're not all gay you know...
