Sorry, all this hand wringing is just losing its effectiveness. If homosexuality was legalized in Russia today, gays would be picketing Putin for gay marriage tomorrow.
There has to be a point when we respect our differences. Its really not a small world... and we're really not the boss of everybody.
Ummm...good for Obama...I guess.
I could care less about the Olympics.
It started out as a venue for the nation's best amateur athletes to show their stuff on an international stage.
Now it's just an international urinating contest to see who can spend the most taxpayer dollars on some bloated, gigantic Olympic infrastructure so a bunch of drugged up athletes can compete in a bunch of sports for a couple weeks every four years.
And when it's over, those taxpayers are usually left with a gigantic, whopping bill.
Complete waste of time.
Either run it like the '84 Olympics (at a profit) or leave my tax dollars out of it completely.
'What kind of sick and twisted toy factory is this?'
'We are all the sum of our tears. Too little and the ground is not fertile, and nothing can grow there. Too much, the best of us is washed away.'
"Better to be dead and cool, than alive and uncool."
Or if we had an Olympics in Saudi Arabia, if we chose some Female athletes and former olympians for the delegation to represent our disagreements with the Saudi Governments treatement of women...that'd be bad to you?
Mind you, not the athletes competing, but the diplomatic delegations sent to the games.
"I am appalled that somebody who is the nominee...would take that kind of position"
"A court took away a presidency"
"...the brother of a man running for president was the governor of the state..."
It's horrifying because Trump is blunt instead of making overt implications.
1. There is far more that is reprehensible about Putin than his use of gays as a political scape goat. Ignore them or not, it makes you an admirer of a Fascist.
2. Eventually homosexuality, and gay marriage will be legalized the world over. Whether or not you reconcile yourself to the winds of this cultural battle is irrelevant.
3. No one said Obama was the boss of Russia. We sent a specially selected envoy to voice our displeasure. You responded with admiration of Putin a man who has murdered journalists, imprisoned democracy activists, and crushed protesters.
These are always deceiving complicated questions in my experience.
But off the cuff, when I read the names in the OP for the delegates, I know them all by name and reputation, and I find it strange to think that I know them by name when I don't even pay attention to sports in general, yet they are appointed *because* they are gay. Aren't they well known as both individual achievers in those sports as well as having maintained very prominent roles in promoting those sports? As long as it's not the only reason, and it's not some hard rule in general, I don't see the issue. Civil rights to me is more about flat out rejection because of sex/race/religion than it is about those being factored in as part of a whole analysis. And that's likely a bad interpretation, but there it is.
