After decades of blistering debate about the balance between honoring Southern history and glorifying slavery and white supremacy, the Duval County School Board in Jacksonville, Fla., voted unanimously on Monday to rename Nathan B. Forrest High School.

I have only one question here. Jacksonville, why did it take this long?

Article is here.

No kidding. Why would this **** take so long. Kinda seems like common sense to change the name of this school.

The obvious choice is obvious.

They should name it after Braxton Bragg, if they want to meet in the middle.

Didn't have time to read the article. So what's the new name for Robert Byrd High School going to be?

Strom Thurmond or Jesse Helms would be appropriate .

What kills me is the guy leading the fight against the name change was "A black confederate activist". Just when I thought I had seen it all...

Yeah, that seems appropriate since they were both Democrats when they were in the Klan.

Meaning nothing--since they were both southern conservatives first, now, and forever--segregationist George Wallace

This is so much crap. What all y'all know about Nathan Bedford Forrest is what you've heard and a paragraph you read somewhere. Nathan Bedford Forrest disbanded the Klan in 1868. Oh, all y'all knew that, right?

"I will say, then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races -- that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man, am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."

You don't know much of the history of Nathan Bedford Forrest or the school or west Jacksonville.

The problem has been that common sense is not common all over this planet.

Some locations still have a pre-U.S. Civil War mind-set and it's kinda hard to change all of those minds.

First you have to drag some people kicking and screaming into the 21st century, then you have to point out that things have changed.

O Lord not this **** again, look man parties can change, platforms change, members change. Judge them by where they are now not where they were decades ago. You know the Republican Party has some what changed since Lincoln right?

You may object to this, but GOD bless your Governor .

They left out the part of his biography that talks about his pre-war business as a slave dealer and his battlefield exploits, where he was responsible for the murder of black union prisoners of war at Fort Pillow. A real jewel. Gotta love those southern heroes, don't you?

Did he also not deal slaves before the war or murder black union prisoners during the war? Hell, this guy qualifies for southern sainthood.

Why? Nothing sinister. People are stupid. And it wasn't until an intelligent person said, "hey wait a minute!!!"

Do you honestly think anyone knew who the hell he was? His name is more likely to come up in a pop culture trivia reference about a tom hanks movie. I mean save a few people that aren't big into history.

There you go. Tell us what you know about Ft. Pillow? Who was involved; the history of the fort and the surrounding area; tell about the battle; the commanders; and their forces; the after action reports. Tell us about Bedford Forrest after the war.

I'd bet that most people today only know who Nathan B. Forrest was because of the movie Forrest Gump...

I am named after Nathan Bedford Forrest. Well actually after my great grandfather, who was named after Nathan Bedford Forrest. I know the guy's history. The fact that there is such a thing as a "black confederate activist" astounds me. Its like being a Jewish Holocaust denier. I was born and raised in the south, I love the south. However you will never see me flying a confederate flag because I know what it really stands for. A lot of southerners have somehow deluded themselves into thinking we were in the right during the civil war when the whole reason the south succeeded was ultimately to preserve the most vile and despicable institution in the history of mankind.

Yeah, when the republicans put a knife in the heart of Southern Democrats racist hegemony they only had their economic beliefs to guide them to their party. Well, except that the Democrats were also supporting modern eugenics in the form of abortion. Sterilization and abortion of the black progeny was all the rage don't you know, dating back to a rousing speech given to the Klan on the subject by Margaret Sanger in 1928.

Stumped for an answer, huh? Or just too lazy to look up the information yourself. Why should I do your research for you? Hell, you can just look at the link I posted on Fort Pillow to find out what happened there. Or is that too much work?

The guy was a scumbag; a man who made his living buying and selling other human beings, then fought to destroy the union, murdered prisoners of war because they happened to be black, and finally capped everything off by founding the KKK. You guys sure know how to pick your heroes.

All good Republicans now. Or more probably Tea Party racists. The black girl? I'm guessing she's a Democrat who voted for Barack Obama.

Lincoln wouldn't even be accepted as a Republican now. Way too radical for that outfit.
