US not welcome in South Africa

Unions in South Africa not happy with the presidents visit.

“We categorically make it known that the visit of the US president to South Africa is an unwelcome visit that will be protested, picketed and resisted by all justice and peace-loving peoples of this country,” the organisations said in a joint statement on Sunday.

“Our rejection is based the US’s arrogant, selfish and oppressive foreign policies, treatment of workers and international trade relations that are rooted in war-mongering, neo-liberal super-exploitation, colonial racism and the disregard and destruction of the environment, thus making the realisation of a just and peaceful world impossible,” they said.

Re: US not welcome in South Africa

It's hard to take Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, the spokesperson of the South African wing of the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement, too seriously when he says that President Obama will be welcomed by "the mother of all protests" when he visits a University of Johannesburg campus Saturday. After all, both Obama and the United States are very popular in South Africa: Recent data from Pew found 74 percent confidence in Obama there, nearly double George W. Bush's 32 percent.

But it's HIS position nevertheless. And his assessment of the US is not inaccurate.

Re: US not welcome in South Africa

South African groups critical of US President Barrack Obama’s global leadership will this weekend begin week-long protests against the US leader, whose visit to their country is scheduled to start on June 29.

The groups, who plan to start the protests on Saturday, say they are unhappy with US foreign policy under the stewardship of Mr Obama.

During Mr Obama’s three-day visit, the US leader is scheduled to be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Johannesburg at its Soweto campus.

This is really going to hurt Obamas feelings.
