At the time it was written, it wasn't. People need to understand that everything on the planet isn't going to match up to modern ethical standards. Like I said, people need to grow the hell up and deal with reality on reality's terms.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Joseph Goebbels used common sense, too.

Anyone that doesn't like the book doesn't have to read it.

Why am I not surprised by those leaping to the defence of black kids showing slavish deference?

See if you can guess which part was edited out of the remake in recognition of changed attitudes:

We're defending free speech. By Any Means Necessary hasn't been banned and that book calls for genocide.

I don't find literature and children's media that reinforces negative racial stereotypes to be "entertainment" I do however feel that Longstocking and the other characters is overdoing it.
Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can sit in a boat, drinking beer all day while you fool around with his Woman.

I don't see why not. If you can't deal with books, be that on a personal level or as a parent, then the only problem is in you, not in the book itself.

My Grandpa and I would have breakfast at Sambos there in Oakland before we went to the Raider's training camps. Most of the waitresses (and the patrons) were black. In fact I think the owner was as well.

Little black Sambo is an extreme example. However those particular books should not be in school or public libraries, especially in any children's section. If a parent want's to put them in their child's library next to Green Eggs & Ham, then I say rock on.
