Joan Rivers unloads a string of slurs in a new video after being asked about the fallout over Alec Baldwin’s recent use of homophobic language.
The comedian has no use for political correctness, and makes her case with some extremely sensitive terms.
“Everybody, just relax,” says Rivers in response to the Baldwin situation.
She goes on to say, “Everybody is either a wop, a n**ger, a k*ke, a ch*nk, a fairy, a mick… everybody’s something, so why don’t we all just calm down?”
Rivers adds, “Be thankful that we’re all living in America, and stop everybody getting so damn uptight.”
Do you think she has a point, or is she way off base?

She's way off base.

I've made a point of not paying attention to what Celebutards from Hollyweird have to say on pretty much anything.
I wish more people would do the same.

I think she makes two good points:

1) Comedians have no use for PC (except to make fun of it)

2) Everyone is "something" (an ethnic or social minority of some kind)

However, that's not what the Baldwin controversy is about. What it's about is how he used someone's sexual orientation as the basis of a slur.

I whole heartedly, strongly, most vociferously AGREE !!

professional career offendees are offensive and cancerous to the soul.

Sincerely,

One dumb ****in' *********** (<<<, insert any vulgar slur here)

So What ? Does any segment of society get special treatment or freedom from aspersions... Squat!

Politically, I care little for A.B. It is interesting how MSNBC attempts to disguise media hypocrisy. PC is BS.

Courtesy counts. Kindness counts. These are lacking in teaching, thought, and actions.

Slurs While Defending Alec Baldwin, Tells America to “Relax”
The comedian has no use for political correctness, and makes her case with some extremely sensitive terms.
“Everybody, just relax,” says Rivers in response to the Baldwin situation.
She goes on to say, “Everybody is either a wop, a n**ger, a k*ke, a ch*nk, a fairy, a mick… everybody’s something, so why don’t we all just calm down?”

I was trying to post a comment in another racial thread that was suddenly closed for review...but my comment applies here, and shows why Baldwin and Rivers (and I've always liked Joan Rivers) are simply wrong. The thread was concerning the "right" of whites to use the n-word...but I think we can all agree that the same principle applies when it comes to homophobic slurs...or slurs of any type.

============begin paste=========

The same people who think it should be okay to use the n-word whenever they want are the same kind of people who think it should be okay to say queer, kike, spic, macaca, hymie, raghead, chink, Jew-boy, wetback, faggot, bluegum, coon, rice-n***er, slopehead, wop, zipperhead...the list goes on. There's no NEED to use these words. If someone who really is Jewish wants to call his fellow Jews "kikes", fine, he can do that - Mel Brooks was famous for making fun of his fellow Jews (and he's still the best comedy director ever). If blacks want to call each other names, fine. If a Hispanic wants to call his fellow Hispanics spics, fine.

You see where I'm going with this - if you want to use the words against your OWN kind...fine. That's between you and those of your own kind, whatever your particular kind may be.

In fact, if you'll think about it, it's not even about race or ethnicity - it's about those within a group being the ONLY ones who can really get away with insulting those who are a part of that group. For instance, if one Marine calls another Marine a 'Jarhead', they'll likely both laugh about it...but if I walk up and call some Marine a 'Jarhead', he'll most likely laugh with me (or more likely laugh AT me)...but he might also punch me in the mouth and dare me to do something about it (and it would be stupid of me to assume that the Marine would do otherwise). For another example, if I were to walk up to one of my fellow whites in the MS Delta and call them a redneck, he'll probably laugh about it and proudly agree...but he just might see it in the way that I'm no longer a Southerner and have lost any right to call him a redneck, and things might go downhill from there.

It even applies to religion - if one Southern Baptist (and I was one, once) refers to a SB preacher as "a real hellfire-and-brimstone preacher", other SB's would laugh about it and nod their heads in agreement...but if a Muslim says that about a SB preacher, you'd probably agree that there wouldn't be any laughter, that things might be taking a very dangerous turn, indeed. "How dare that Muslim think he can talk about our preacher that way? He ain't one of us!"

This is why it's okay for blacks to use the n-word, but not us. It's not about race or ethnicity, but about us not being part of that particular group.

============end paste=============

And this is why it's okay for LGBT's to call each other insulting slurs, but it's NOT okay for those of us who are straight to do so. We're not (or at least most of us are not) part of that group.

Baldwin is free to cast as many aspersions and slurs as he wants to. Last time I looked, he hasn't been thrown in jail for what he said

But freedom includes a businesses freedom to hire and fire him

People just need to get over these kind of things.

I certainly agree. :ranton: I guess I've just tired with hyper-sensitivity exhibited by almost every 'special interest' group whomever they may be; that, and blatant pandering, self serving hypocrisy by all segments of media. :rantoff:

Have a good one, Sangha

Media businesses have the right and the freedom to be as "sensitive" as they want about whatever they want to be sensitive about.

Again, you find agreement here. I might extrapolate but it would likely derail the thread... another subject, another thread, another time.

I think he'd feel very comfortable posting at DP. Come on in Alec, the water's lovely!

It's their bread and butter. Actually, if you think about it, their entire purpose is to stand outside society and critique or evaluate. Truth be told, many of them are otherwise liberals or leftists, and they support being against certain ideas, which express themselves in words. The difference is, to them either we shouldn't care about the naughty words, or only they shouldn't care about the naughty words. Many times it's the latter. I always found it to be a style of elitism within the comedy world.

Yes, it's the old "I stand against your elitism which gives you the power to define what is acceptable and what is not. That power belongs to me!"

Gotta admit, that's one funny bit!

IMO, the bigger deal you make over this stuff, the more power you give those words.

Joan, who I actually don't like, is essentially right. I am waaaay tired of people letting words hurt them. They're just words! That said, when Joan said them they were not offensive because she was simply commenting about the words, not screaming them to intimidate and humiliate an individual or group. I think that is the primary difference between comedy and what Baldwin did. Baldwin used it to harm, and if we are going to police words, that should be the only measure is the intent. I mean, I can walk up to the boys at the skatepark, and because they love me, I love them, and I've heard them say it too each other... I'm sure I could say, "hey nig, how are you this mornin'" and be nonetheworseforwear. But if in the heat of something I called someone in the same group nig, I'd probably fear for my life.

In the end though we all need to look at intent. For example, my "Bless your heart" would probably get me banned if it's intent were to be judged as opposed to the words themselves.

.

That will never be OK.

I'll just add that in general I am opposed to all of the PC bull****.

But some things should never be said.

"Political correctnest does not legislate tolerance; it only organises hatred.

I think she's right.
Racial/ethnic slurs would have no effect if people just didn't react to them.

However, that's not what the Baldwin controversy is about. What it's about is how he used someone's sexual orientation as the basis of a slur.

Why this is HORRIBLE! How will these poor people ever recover? Poor things. :lamo

I'm sure right wing whack jobs love this piece.

Honestly. Rivers is a used up wrinkled douche bag. .

No, you're completely wrong about that. Actually the hurtful and disgusting things she said are closely aligned to your own delight and viciousness in using the words "Right wing whack jobs" and "Used up wrinkled douche bag" in your post.

There was a time in which American comedians were actually funny. You could watch their acts and actually feel humor to the extent you would laugh out loud. And at the same time, there was no swearing at all, no insults or meanness, no humiliation to others, no grossness or depravity, just good clean, clever and fun humor.

What changed was Liberal/MTV pop culture with it's "everything is good" NO JUDGMENTS demands for excesses in everything, sex, porn, language, grossness, everything must be x rated, no standards. That is what we now have and that is what your post and Joan Rivers reflect. It must be a shock, it must hurt others, it must have no dignity, it must eschew morality and decency, then it is lauded as "funny." As you become accustomed to that, then it must get worse to get Liberal accolades.

You cannot degrade a culture in that way and then demand that very strict standards be maintained in the specific areas you designate. Once the culture goes, it goes completely.

If you want to upgrade our culture, put dignity back in American life and language, it will have to be across the board, not selectively. But who is willing to do that?

I think the way some people are so sensitive about how other people react in response to their sensitivities is hilarious.

The politics of comedy lol. There was a somewhat clever show that used to be on called The Green Room. It was mostly pretty great stuff, but really niche. Anyways, they'd get into the parts of jokes and what makes them cool or horrible, they would drink and whatnot. Then sometimes there would be almost no self-awareness when they were venturing into politics. Some of the political commentary would be hilarious, but then other times it would seem beyond redemption, like you were staring into the face of an angry child after they were told Santa Claus did not exist.
