Family Disputes Gay Server's Story - Local News - New York, NY | NBC News

"The husband and wife, who asked to remain anonymous, showed NBC 4 New York a receipt that appeared to be printed at the same minute, on the same date, for the same $93.55 total, except with an $18 tip.

They also provided a document they said was a Visa bill, which appears to indicate their card was charged for the meal plus the tip, for a total of $111.55.

The couple told NBC 4 New York that they believed their receipt was used for a hoax. The wife says she is left-handed and could not have made the slash in the tip line, which she said looks to be drawn from the right."

Lie by social media, die by social media.

My curiosity is why did a patron have any idea about a server's sexuality in the first place. I mean I'm all for everyone loving who they want, but I don't want to have knowledge of my server's sexuality during my meal or really anytime unless/until we for some reason become friends. I might not tip someone who put their sexuality in my face in some way. I get this is about the idea that she wasn't stiffed the tip, but that's beside the point to me.

It seems that the media was offered a story that they wanted to believe, and simply ran with it. The person offering up this tale of sexual orientation bias got free publicity generating outpourings of financial and emotional support so everybody, except the falsely accused, was a winner.

I wasn't sure sure about the story in the first place but do think it's much easier to add a tip to a receipt after you leave than to take it away like it wasn't there but then so is the little note. I think they didn't tip and added it afterwards. They also didn't write anything and she wrote the note afterwards. Case dismissed!

Edit: actually thinking more about it the server probably printed a second ticket and did all that because the totals were different. Duh - I need to drink more coffee.

Well so far all we have to really go by is the receipt the waitress provided and a story of another receipt being shown to NBC 4 New York. I'd like to see both receipts side by side personally.

If proven true that the waitress faked the receipt, I can guarantee it won't go well for the waitress. I will say it isn't sounded to well for the waitress right now though if the couple served is providing rock solid evidence as News 4 has claimed.

Like Summerwind, I doubted the woman's story because how does one know someone's sexual orientation unless the fact was revealed? At no time did the accused said she revealed that fact. I think the patron's story makes sense and is completely believable. I think this will blow up in the attention-whoring server's face.

You assume that the "whoops" will get equal attention/reaction to the original story. I doubt that very much. Will the server be forced to return the sympathetic "contributions" received?

The couple's credit card company's bill has the exact amount including the tip. If the couple didn't leave the tip they say they did, how did the credit card company get the exact amount correct that matches the couples copy?

That was the proof for me.

Again, so they claim. Have you seen the bill personally? Have you seen the other receipt personally?

I even stated that IF the proof is true, the waitress was in trouble. Maybe it's because I like to see the evidence before I personally make judgement.

There have been several 'stories' like this...all gaining celebrity status to show just how evil "anti-gay" people can be and how sympathetic people are to the plight of the homosexual. This is the second involving an alleged stiffing at the tip jar...hey...it worked once, why not try it twice. There was also the recent 'letter' from the alleged grandfather of an alleged eeeevil homophobic mother...except no one seemed to be able to identify who they were and what the actual facts were in the situation, if in fact there WERE any facts. But hey...we don need no stinkin facts when we are trying to promote an agenda. Even if this turns out to be complete and utter schlock, there will be people that will defend the lies, because after all...while THESE incidents may have been faked they still represent some REAL cases of discrimination going on in this country and gives those silent tragedies a voice. Hey...it worked for Al Sharpton and Tawana Brawley...why not another pet cause.

Saw it personally??? Seriously???

I watched the video, and it was on the video. I guess if you're saying that the reporter lied, made up the bill and receipt she saw and showed in her video report, and is a conspirator with the couple, then I would need to see it personally before I could debate it here.

So the only way any of us can debate the voracity of anything is to see it ourselves. I'll remember that next time you post your opinion about something. (Holy Cow!!! LMFAO)

Slow down there slick, the article didn't have a video attached. I even stated I would like to SEE the receipts even if it were on video. I only have the article to go by. Feel free to attach a video then before going half-cocked and insaulting people.

Sorry about that then. It was the very first link in the OP. The article was the second. Look at the top of the OP for the link to the video. (slick has slowed to a halt ;)

What am I missing ... either the couple have an actual VISA bill for the amount they claim or they don't.
This should be simple.

No worries.

The principle currency of the modern ideologue is outrage and when one wants more currency sometimes they counterfeit it. If enough counterfeit outrage ends up in circulation it will lose its value and we'll see something else take its place. My preference for that replacement is truth and reason but I'm not holding my breath.

I had thought this story was made-up from the beginning.

As for NExtEra, next he'll have to explain away the credit card being charged the amount of the bill plust the tip listed on the reciept.

To prove their point they also produced a Visa bill, which indicated their card was charged for the $93.55 meal plus the tip, for a total of $111.55.

Seems to me, what happened is Dana probably printed a duplicate reciept, wrote the comments and sent it out to the blog. The writing is not the same on the two reciepts, most noticeable in the "5's"

Normally on all the receipts I have gotten from a restraunt, the customer and merchant copies were the EXACT same with the only change being the name "Merchant" and "Customer". The customer copy the couple provided does not have a signature spot on it like the merchant copy does.

I'm only pointing out differences I see and asking if anyone else has had the same experience where the customer copy and merchant copy were different.

Slow down there son. I never said the couple was lying, I am only poitning out differences for discussions. Shame on me for not automatically being on the "bash the gay" wagon.

Yes, the reciepts will have differences like that often. Additionally, if that were really a concern, the owners of the restaraunt, when interviewed, would have pointed that out if that was an issue. Instead they came up with some goofy claim that the credit card bill was fake, even though we can all see it and the reporter saw the orginal.

It's possible the owners did it to gain some attention for the restaraunt, but the waitress had the most to gain and would have had an idea of the donations she might get, following similar cases in the not too distant past.

Again, I have yet to see a receipt where the customer copy doesn't have the signed line on it while the merchant copy has it on there. That's the difference I see that makes me suspicious. Again, I could be wrong but just pointing that out.

As for the visa bill, if the food were specials, it would be possible to have that same total on multiple bills. I don't know who is lying for sure right now, but if all the facts the couple have are correct, the waitress and/or the restraunt is in trouble.

Just so you know, it really is not that uncommon. Normally at nicer restaraunts.

BTW, off-topic a bit, I realize... But this one was apparently fake too:
