House To Vote On Bill That Would Impose $5,000 Fee For Protesting Drilling Projects

The House is likely to vote on a number of GOP bills this week related to the oil and gas industry, arguably the most sweeping of which is the Federal Lands Jobs and Energy Security Act.The bill, introduced by Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO), is broad legislation designed to make it much easier for oil and gas companies to obtain permission to drill on public lands. If signed into law, the legislation would automatically approve onshore drilling permits if the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) failed to act on them in 60 days.
If an individual does not like a proposed drilling project and wanted to oppose it, he or she would have to pay a $5,000 fee to file an official protest.

“This bill is not simply anachronistic; it is dangerous,” a group of Democratic Representatives said in their dissent of the bill. “It would harm the environment, short-circuit critical reviews, and establish barriers to people wishing to challenge decisions on oil and gas development in their backyards.”

Wow... What a terrible bill. Not only does it put major barriers in place for us to practice our free speech, but it also destroys the environment, and make it a lot easier for energy companies to get access to once government protect land. Awful bill.

What was the fee before? At first I was outraged. But it rather makes sense that there would be some cost to officially delaying a drilling project. I don't see it as a major barrier of free speech. It certainly costs money to file a lawsuit; same idea. A person/group can still express their opinions all they want...in press releases/conferences...the media. They just can't "officially delay" a project without incurring some costs. More I think about it, the more sense it makes.

By harboring someones ability to and putting a dollar sign in front of someone to have the change to actively challenge something that is ridiculous. No only is that undemocratic, its plutocratic.

That a little old lady from Pasedena could file a formal complaint against a drilling permit being applied for in Anchorage, Alaska that would delay such permit is ridiculous.

If the gov't can rent your 2A rights back to you, via CCW permits, then why not your 1A rights as well? It is simply a "reasonable restriction" to entertain the econuts that protest everything, sort of like a parade permit.

    Protesting should be free.

Interfering with, delaying or getting in the way of an ongoing business operation should be subject to arrest for public disorderly conduct.

And 99% of the time they do get arrested.

    Serious question:

    Why is that ridiculous?

Because when insane people protest, they make funny signs. When insane people carry weapons, they murder someone.

Although insane protests sometimes involve fire...

Because I don't like little old ladies.

    Dear President Obama:

It has come to my attention that you are considering signing a treaty with Afghanistan that will keep our troops there for an extended period of time. I don't like that at all. It's not in our best interests.

^^You think it makes sense that that particular letter would halt the process and cause a formal inquiry? I don't.
