That crap is not "authoritarian parenting". It's cruelly sadistic child abuse meted out by truly twisted adults who should, quite frankly, be taken out and shot.

It's sick that these people are out there, and that they followed a book sold under the guise of Christianity. It isn't Christian to starve or beat a child, so don't turn this into a Christian/Atheist thing. It's evil, not Christian.

The author's response to a different case of another child killed by his techniques:

Charming. I wonder which of our posters is this guy in disguise.....

•Wearing the plastic tubing around the parent's neck as a constant reminder to obey
•"Swatting" babies as young as six months old with instruments such as "a 12-inch willowy branch," thinner plastic tubing or a wooden spoon
•"Blanket training" babies by hitting them with an instrument if they try to crawl off a blanket on the floor
•Beating older children with rulers, paddles, belts and larger tree branches
•"Training" children with pain before they even disobey, in order to teach total obedience
•Giving cold water baths, putting children outside in cold weather and withholding meals as discipline
•Hosing off children who have potty training accidents
•Inflicting punishment until a child is "without breath to complain."

Michael Pearl tells one mother on his website, "I could break his anger in two days. He would be too scared to get angry. On the third day he would draw into a quiet shell and obey."

the older children with rulers paddles and belts is perfectly fine,as it stings and teaches a lesson, with no physical or psycological harm.

all he rest are absolutely horrible, they aim to not only physically abuse a child, but mentally also, the goal is to show punishment for misdeeds, not to physically hurt them and scar them for life, whatever happened to daddy's belt being the solution????

Not to mention that there's nothing Biblical about starving your child or putting them out in the cold to freeze.

    Employers love people like this.
You took this from child abuse to employment? Agenda driven people like yourself make these boards so annoying. Try to stay on topic for once, please.

All children are not the same. The adopted daughter was only trying to stand her ground against the monsters that were granted adoption papers on her. Other kids might have tried to keep from being beaten, starved, and left out in the cold without clothing, but not her. She knew that they were in the wrong and would not bow down to them. It cost her her life.

I don't give a damn about the pearls and their stupid book. I'm 100% against censorship of literature.

Anyone have an address for the murderous parents?

EDIT: I just reread the link and see that both parents have been found guilty of murder. I guess I'll have to wait until they've served their time. The man had better concoct a story about murdering someone else. He won't do well in population with the facts known to the inmates.

If it's OK for older children it should be OK for adults. Maybe if your boss punished you with rulers or belts you'd work harder.

    They're religious?
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Ok, not saying I agree with these techniques, I certainly do not, BUT, and argument can be made with a great deal of data to support it that corporal punishment (Which this is and was widely used in Europe and Canada until about 30 years ago) is effective in keeping order and discipline in children. I grew up in Canada when corporal punishment was just starting to be banned, but I received the "strap" at school, and when we lived in England when I was much younger, the cane and the strap were very effective. I KNEW that if I messed up I would be punished harshly, and I thought twice about it. I have been somewhat lucky in that my first three kids didn't need any physical discipline, but my fourth and youngest boy has received a few taps on the rear-end from time to time. Some kids respond well to a calm approach to discipline, (time outs, taking things away etc..) Some do not. Time outs and taking things away from my 4 year old does not work, however, a threat of spanking does, so it is what it is..
