Interesting. Perhaps you might find the opinion of these uneducated scrubs worth noting: Poll Results | IGM Forum

The results aren't nearly as one sided as you seem to presume, due to more recent studies conducted that find the negative effect of wage hikes to have been previously overstated.

Yeah, those uneducated scrubs should just go out and become doctors or something.

Not only does the right shriek at people who aren't working, they seem to want to make life more difficult for people who ARE working jobs they deem unworthy of any financial reward.

If higher wages are better then why not make then really high, like $250 an hour. Under your concept that would really BOOST the economy.

Good point! All I did was take off two weeks (no paid vacation?) but I should have taken off more allowing for SS/Medicare payroll taxation and, as you point out, incentive to actually get a job.

Good thing there's no grey area between "doctor" and "minimum wage".

Also, I want them to work - which is why I don't want it raised.

If less regulation is preferable, why not allow the Chinese to sweeten their toothpaste with antifreeze? Wait, that's a really stupid leap isn't it?

When you don't provide people what they need to lift themselves out of poverty, or when you don't provide assistance when (despite all their best efforts) they are unable to do so themselves, don't you just perpetuate the cycle. Why not make sure they are capable of providing a safe home, decent nutrition, a good education and decent healthcare especially to those who are raising children. Poverty is oppressive and as a child born into that your work to build a better life is already profoundly more difficult then someone who does not have those challenges to overcome. I do not see the benefit, other than to protect what you consider yours, in denying these people those basic things. Minimum wage jobs are not just for college students and high school kids anymore, people raise children on those wages, or at least attempt to.

Re: Gallup: 76% Of Americans Support A Minimum Wage Increase

This really shouldn't be something to argue about.

Wages never increase proportionately with the supply and quality of goods and services because laborers are locked into their employment by their life situations, which means industry leaders can stall out increasing wages while capitalizing on the profits to expand their businesses by attracting more investors and expanding operations to new markets. No matter how little a company's success translates into a pay raise for the little guy, it takes a long time before selling your house, uprooting your family, and taking a gamble on a new job somewhere else seems like a more economically feasible option.

Such cost cutting measures have obvious short term advantages for individual economic units, but it undermines capitalism on the whole because making wealth inaccessible depresses the labor necessary to create it. While each individual unit only adds to this problem bit by tiny bit, all of them adding to it together over long periods of time creates significant problem spots in our market.

    Even Adam Smith knew that.

I would support a minimum wage increase of $2-3 over the course of a few years, but tied with that we also need to cut back on social programs.

For that to maybe work we would also have to revise our trade agreements to make foreign labor more inaccessible . . . then wait a decade or so for things to even out after our trade partners retaliate.

High domestic unemployment is the first pillar of the world economic order.
