I have absolutely no idea why people could do something like this. Yes, they are poor and hungry, but putting cyanide in a watering hole - not just animals, but people could have been poisoned as well. And to kill so many elephants! What a horrible waste. Reminds me of the horrific buffalo massacres that used to happen in our country. Are people this stupid?

And as for those who purchase ivory on the illegal exchanges - shame on them!

I hope I have this in the right forum.

Zimbabwe Elephant Poisoning Death Toll Rises Above 300; Lions, Vultures, Hyenas Also Killed

More than 300 elephants and other animals have died of cyanide poisoning by poachers in Zimbabwe's largest game park, a wildlife conservation group said Monday.

"In July, around 300 elephants had died from cyanide poisoning in Hwange and were discovered by a group of hunters who flew over the area," Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force told AFP.

He said other animals that have also been killed include lions, vultures, painted dogs and hyenas.

"The authorities only stepped in in September and by then the numbers had escalated. As at last week, about 325 had died altogether."

Government officials were not immediately available to confirm the figure.

The parks and wildlife authority said last week that the death toll from poisoning was 100. Four poachers have been jailed for at least 15 years each for the crime.

Rodrigues accused the authorities of downplaying the toll, adding that poaching masterminds often got off scot-free.

Let's hope there a pinch of cyanide left in each piece of that ivory. Serves them right.

Maybe one of those elephants stomped somebody's kid to death.

I can't think of any other reason someone would do this.

i can think of 2 reasons: two tusk's made of ivory. i heard on a old documentary that ivory was nicknamed "white gold".

i am normally againsist capital punishment, but in the case of poachers and people who profit off the slaughter of endangered animals, i make a exception.
