Well, that's interesting, because in the preliminary testimony she said she didn't remember a thing past midnight. And remembered nothing of what happened to her. Their case wouldn't have rested on her account. She didn't have one. ??

Idk, it was what one of the links by the op indicated. Seems odd to me. If a victim really wants justice served, why refuse to cooperate?

He said charges were dropped when Daisy Coleman declined to cooperate with prosecutors.

Melinda Coleman told CNN's Erin Burnett on Monday that White's claims are "absolutely not true," and said the police report from the incident proves it.

"The victims decided they no longer wanted to participate in the case," White told HuffPost. "They gave no deposition or statement and invoked their Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves. The charges being dismissed had everything to do with the victims not wanting to assist in their case."

Prosecutor Robert Rice eventually dropped all charges against Barnett, who said the sex was consensual.

The claim is that the victim being persecuted by the community preceded the charges being dropped. That could be your answer.

It seems her life is turning into a living hell so perhaps she just wanted it to be over. A big media circus trial would further propell her into the limelight and the attacks would continue.
I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it.

If your case is legitimate, and you are dedicated to the truth winning out, you have to be willing to stay dedicated, no matter the outside pressure. What it tells me is that they were either doubtful of their own position, or they lacked moral courage.

Or the daughter is not mentally stable after all this **** and there is hesitancy to go through the ordeal that is the trial process which could make her condition worse. After moving away and having their house burned down, they may have re-evaluated that stance.

Either way, I don't see how the police could have ****** this up as much as they have. They needed to be more aggressive when there was still evidence to be found and they should have done more to keep the peace in this town.

Whichever the case, the trial would require cooperation by the victim of the crime.

No, it is not. At 17 years old, the person would still be a minor. Just browsing through the laws on Ohio sex laws, a 17 year old boy with a 14 year old girl would not be statutory rape. Over and over again you'll see 18 or older with person older than 13 but less than 16 is a violation of the law, but nothing to suggest 17 and 14 is against the law. At least with regards to statutory rape.

Small towns and football players? You are talking about systems of privilege, folks, and these are the same systems that produce so much sociopathic behavior among college and then pro athletes. When you create a group of people who can walk on water by protecting them from the consequences of their actions because you derive some sort of weird ego gratification from their sports accomplishments, what other expectation do you have?
