Off topic, but now that he has been out of office for awhile, how socially conservative do you think Bush Jr. Was? It seems most of that agenda was designed to secure the political support of the religious right, as opposed to being part of his core political values.
that's a good question... one that i'm not sure I know the answer to.
if i had to guess, i would say he fairly conservative, but not as much as he led on.... as you say, he did need the support of that base ,so he said all the right things to all the right people.

i'm "older" ( 60) and although I lead a somewhat socially conservative life ( in public.... private is a whole 'nuther ballgame), my politics are quite different.
unlike Reps and Dems, i'm not out to mandate you live by my morals or ethics... i'm cool with letting folks choose for themselves.

their individualism isn't what will keep them out of high office....lack of money , lack of national infrastructure, and lack of a fair playing field will.

hell, we don't get invited to presidential debates, and we can't afford to put on our own multimillion dollar prime time spectacle either.... according to the media and most voters, nobody exists outside of Dems and Reps.

for now, libertarians are left to operate within the major parties... mostly the Republican party , as the Democratic party is very hostile towards us kind of folks.

They haven't been there long enough to get tainted by Washington and the old foggies don't much care for them challenging them. The Tea Party Movement is a call to return to the Constitutional first principles, shrink the size of an over bloated Federal government and demand fiscal responsibility from Washington. Apparently that is too much of a threat to many.
That's precisely why I don't support the Tea Party. That youthful anti-elite, anti-establishment attitude reminds me of the New Left of the 1960s. I just don't like the right-wing version of the hippies. They are too naive, too intransigent, and too democratic.

Yeah, there's some pretty bad cesspools out there for political discourse, but Free Republic is one of the worst.

Me too; albeit, my personal brand of small-L libertarianism is a little left of what is generally considered to be "libertarian."
