School bans most balls during recess: Smart move or going too far?

And the left wing wussification of America continues. When I was in HS we played "kill the man with the ball" in the gym on rainy days for PE class. It was played with basket balls and you aimed for the head, those were the days!

meh its not that bad of an idea! In the winter when we had to play on the playgrounds we were only allowed to play footy with tennis balls because a full size ball would break windows and potentially smash someone in the face who wasn't playing.

This is just speculation, but, I guarantee you that some parent at some point complained that their child was hit in the face with a ball or pushed down during a game of tag and the school's administration got tired of hearing it.

So I've read through this thread and no one has said anything which suggested to me they actually read the article, they just jumped right to complaining:

The school district, in a press release, said that due to construction going on at the school, there is "limited space" for the children to play during their 20-minute recess period. "With children in close proximity to each other, it is not safe for them to be engaged in unstructured play with hardballs," said the district.

It's not clear when the construction project will come to an end at the school and if kids will be able to resume normal ball-playing after it wraps up. A call to the superintendent's office for confirmation has not yet been returned.

Soft nerf balls will be provided during recess, and kids can play with hardballs during gym and intramural athletics.

But, by all means, carry on with the complaining which is, at best, premature and simply ignore the conditions which led to this decision in the first place.

Why not just ban recess?

Home-schooling is the answer. No more school/govt liability.

We just started home schooling our kids last week. It's awesome. We realized our son, who tests out in the 95th percentile of every subject, isn't as good at Math as we thought. Why? Because when he messes a problem up his teachers would allow him to correct it instead of giving him the grade he earned. Sure, he scores well on the standardized test. However, his teachers are cheating him by essentially giving him the answer so his grades stay up. All to keep their numbers up lest they be fired and can't provide for their families. I don't blame them. I blame the system that forces that behavior.

That is so gay I don't know where to begin. Most US schools have plexiglass windows. Even when I was in school it was damn hard to break a school window glass or plexiglass. In gym we got hit in the face with basketballs, footballs, soccer balls and the red ones we used for bombardment, kickball and dodgeball. We lived. We learned to get out of the way and or hand eye improved. Of course the schools were not worried about parents suing if little wonder child scraped a knee or stubbed a toe. Children would get hurt because we were children and did stupid things. It's part of growing up into an adult.

It's sickening what is happening. We are raising a whiney generation of pathetic individuals who think no one wins or loses. Don't understand competition. Know why Tina has two mommys but can't balance a freaking check book and think speaking ebonics and wearing your pants around your ass is acceptable.

Stupid all around.

Our daughter went to parochial schools and our granddaughter is home schooled. Best idea.

Nonsense. If your son isn't as good at math as you thought, then it's because you thought more highly of his abilities than he had. It has nothing to do with the teacher giving him the opportunity to learn from his mistakes. I'm sorry, but your entire premise is ridiculous. How does simply marking the response wrong and ignoring it going forward improve his ability to do math? That doesn't make any sense at all. Furthermore, I have very serious doubts the child gets to retake questions on the standardized test, meaning the score he gets on that test is based off his initial answers.

Giving the child the opportunity to see where the error was and correct it provides the student the ability to not only learn from the mistake but to understand the logic behind the problem as well.

You must not know any homeschoolers. I do, and they have a different mentality.

First of all, you are stereotyping. People homeschool for many different reasons. And there is no more a set type of homeschooler than there is a person who sends their child to public school

Second, your premise seemed to be that people should homeschool their children so that there was no school for their child to go to to have liability concerns. That would put more people doing homeschool, and more chance that someone would be willing to sue someone else for their child being hurt at home.

ok...

1. Our schools don't have plexiglass and windows did used to break so it was a relevant concern.
2. We also got hit in the face with footballs but it wasn't us the schools were worried about. It was the hundreds of other kids ( mostly girls) who didn't want to get hit in the face with a ball. ( helps if you read the post)
3. Chill out you sounds like a miserable old man.

I am not talking about just the article. It is a general statement based on when I was a teacher at the YMCA and what I observed at the Chicago public schools while contracted to the school board for IT.

We were playing or I had the kids playing dodge ball. It was outlawed a week later. As was football (touch) and other ball related gym and outdoor games where there was a chance of injury. The list goes on and on. It is to the point where again it is just stupid. Far to many parents are not being parents and blame the schools for everything, and in the end the schools and children pay the price.

We are not in England. Your position is irrelevant and has no bearing at all.

Girls got hit in the face as well. So what? Welcome to middle school.

Personal attacks? Thanks for bringing down the intelligence level.

You'll need to source that.

You'll need to source that.

Why? It is silly. People don't send their children to someone else for homeschooling. It would not be called homeschooling? So if the child gets hurt at home the parents will sue themselves?

says the man who started is last post with " this is so gay".

Your talking out of your backside Manta and most of your posts in this thread is just mindless drivel which seem to come straight from a episode of fox and friends. As to your point about it being ok for a child to be smashed in the face in recess. " Hi Mr and Mrs smith this is young Tina's teacher from school, sorry to inform you that your daughter suffered a broken nose and a mild concussion today whilst walking across the playground, in future can you please inform young Tina that she should spend her entire recess watching for incoming balls so she can avoid this".

Absurd.

Yes that is not a personal attack on you. It was in reference to your statement. Huge difference.

Moronic post at best. Nothing but hyperbole based on? Nothing. Not even worth responding to.

Coming from someone who knows nothing about our schools... yes it is.

1.ok it was offensive because you used the word gay in a negative way and i'm sure gay posters on here would take offence.
2. Why is that moronic? An 11 year old me could easily break your nose with a football.
3. What is it exactly I don't understand about schools?

First life lesson for the kids " you can't always do what you want where you want"

Play and sports balls should be banned, but there certainly should be a required background check before purchasing one.

Why should kids have balls when there isn't a single male in education administration these days who has any?

It is not just the parents but also the grandparents who have lost their god damn minds. I have a mother who is now a grandmother who gets mad when I use a nerf bat on the little prince, her grandson and my nephew. This is the same woman who would not let me out of gym with a broken toe and made me play football and soccer with it. This is a woman who when me and my sister were 12 and 13 gave us money and sent us off wandering around the wildwood NJ amusement piers until they closed. This is a woman who used to let me play in an old shed full of glass doors because I had fun breaking them and no one wanted them. This is a woman who at the age of 17 had my grandparents drop me and my sister off in NYC all alone for a guns and roses concert in madison square garden. This is a woman who let me stock pornos for my dad's video store from the age of 15. Now this crazy woman gets on my back because I wacked the kid on the head with a damned nerf bat because it makes him feel bad when he is not allowed to cheat in games. I am so glad the little prince now has a new daddy who loves giving him a bit of fatherly rough housing he so glaringly needed. I am so waiting for the little prince to become 12 because I get to take him to play paintball. I keep telling mys sister to just put the little prince in a god damned dress because he is a little wussbag.

People have lost their god damned minds trying to keep kids so safe from any sort of pain. Let the kids play some dodgeball or some red ass with lacross balls. The wimpy kids can go pick flowers or write poetry or whatever else they do when they are not trying to hurt each other. Don't get me wrong, the world needs flower pickers and poets, but not every kid needs to be coddled and wimpy. And remember this comes from a guy who wears little frilly dresses. man up for christs sake, and this goes for some of the girls too. Learn to rely on yourself and how hard you can play. Stop lowering the bar to accommodate those who should be doing something else.

Holy **** your mom is my mom! This woman could give a crap about her own kids but her precious grandchildren are like fine china. Recently I took my daughter and nephew with her to a farmer market and the kids got balloon animals. Well my crazy nephew was messing with his, after I told him to stop, and it popped and he started crying so I told him to suck it up and stop and my mom said and I quote "a balloon popping is traumatizing for a child" a god damn balloon popping!!!!! I am never gonna let her live that down, that is some of the stupidest **** I've ever heard.

1.ok it was offensive because you used the word gay in a negative way and i'm sure gay posters on here would take offence.

So what? I am not talking about any gay person. I am not referring to any gay person. If they want to be offended well it's on them. This does not change the fact you made a personal attack, period.

2. Why is that moronic? An 11 year old me could easily break your nose with a football.

And they could break a leg playing on the monkey bars. Or break an arm playing teather ball. Kids are going to get hurt at some point. It is part of growing up. Taking prescausions are one thing, taking away games because someone might get hurt at some point? Why don't we have them sit around and sing songs for recess.

3. What is it exactly I don't understand about schools?

Schools here are not the same. Never have been and never will be. You don't seem to understand this.

First life lesson for the kids " you can't always do what you want where you want"

First lesson of being a parent "kids get hurt" it happens.

She is on a play ground, she should be looking around. Duh. Situational awareness.
