Parents willing to sue schools for such things would still find someone to sue even if they children were hurt on their property. There are just too many parents (even if I'm pretty sure they are the minority) that are too eager to place blame (whether due to grief or greed) rather than accept that accidents happen.

You must not know any homeschoolers. I do, and they have a different mentality.

It is not just the parents but also the grandparents who have lost their god damn minds. I have a mother who is now a grandmother who gets mad when I use a nerf bat on the little prince, her grandson and my nephew. This is the same woman who would not let me out of gym with a broken toe and made me play football and soccer with it. This is a woman who when me and my sister were 12 and 13 gave us money and sent us off wandering around the wildwood NJ amusement piers until they closed. This is a woman who used to let me play in an old shed full of glass doors because I had fun breaking them and no one wanted them. This is a woman who at the age of 17 had my grandparents drop me and my sister off in NYC all alone for a guns and roses concert in madison square garden. This is a woman who let me stock pornos for my dad's video store from the age of 15. Now this crazy woman gets on my back because I wacked the kid on the head with a damned nerf bat because it makes him feel bad when he is not allowed to cheat in games. I am so glad the little prince now has a new daddy who loves giving him a bit of fatherly rough housing he so glaringly needed. I am so waiting for the little prince to become 12 because I get to take him to play paintball. I keep telling mys sister to just put the little prince in a god damned dress because he is a little wussbag.

People have lost their god damned minds trying to keep kids so safe from any sort of pain. Let the kids play some dodgeball or some red ass with lacross balls. The wimpy kids can go pick flowers or write poetry or whatever else they do when they are not trying to hurt each other. Don't get me wrong, the world needs flower pickers and poets, but not every kid needs to be coddled and wimpy. And remember this comes from a guy who wears little frilly dresses. man up for christs sake, and this goes for some of the girls too. Learn to rely on yourself and how hard you can play. Stop lowering the bar to accommodate those who should be doing something else.

And the left wing wussification of America continues. When I was in HS we played "kill the man with the ball" in the gym on rainy days for PE class. It was played with basket balls and you aimed for the head, those were the days!

meh its not that bad of an idea! In the winter when we had to play on the playgrounds we were only allowed to play footy with tennis balls because a full size ball would break windows and potentially smash someone in the face who wasn't playing.

This is just speculation, but, I guarantee you that some parent at some point complained that their child was hit in the face with a ball or pushed down during a game of tag and the school's administration got tired of hearing it.

Re: School bans most balls during recess: Smart move or going too far?

So I've read through this thread and no one has said anything which suggested to me they actually read the article, they just jumped right to complaining:

The school district, in a press release, said that due to construction going on at the school, there is "limited space" for the children to play during their 20-minute recess period. "With children in close proximity to each other, it is not safe for them to be engaged in unstructured play with hardballs," said the district.

It's not clear when the construction project will come to an end at the school and if kids will be able to resume normal ball-playing after it wraps up. A call to the superintendent's office for confirmation has not yet been returned.

Soft nerf balls will be provided during recess, and kids can play with hardballs during gym and intramural athletics.
But, by all means, carry on with the complaining which is, at best, premature and simply ignore the conditions which led to this decision in the first place.
