House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures[W:120]

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

Because then we would have to put more people on the payroll to police everyone going to the national monuments.

Weirdly, they got along just fine without being policed.

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

The park rangers are mostly unarmed and are not there primarily for security.

Yes they are. There are many park rangers that specialize in security and law enforcement.

False. Only Park Police are armed, and they are a much smaller number than the Rangers.

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

That scenic pull-out at Mt Rushmore never had security. Why does it suddenly need it now?
I dont know what a "scenic pull-out" is...

And don't spout the party line about channeling traffic. That's clearly a ruse as it was never necessary before, either.
You are going to need to go more into detail about what exactly is happening.

Explain that one. (Minnie616 apparently couldn't and gave up.)
Well i dont know what a "scenic pull out" is and it seems to be a big part of your post.

You dont think national monuments are being policed even when the US federal gov is 100% open?

They never have been in the many visits I've made. People aren't animals; they don't need constant supervision.

The monuments were not barricaded off in any previous shutdown. The gift shop closed in the Lincoln Memorial. Tours needing guides (like in the Washington Monument) were closed. That was about it. No open-air monuments were closed.

Really? Well saying armed rangers pissed off toruists in Yellowstone just 6 days ago..

I will take a moment to savor the irony of "TheDemSocialist" supporting his point by citing a Fox News blog. That accomplished, I now suggest that you look up the subset of US park rangers known as the park police. You'll find that they supervise the much larger, unarmed, force of park rangers.:peace

Problem is, the Park Police (part of the NPS) has been dubbed as essential personnel. So they'd be there doing their daily mission (just as many other federal employees). What they're doing with these unnecessary closures actually takes more personnel and costs more money. Frankly, the decision to do this should be probed and thoroughly investigated.

Since 9/11, the NPS has become more law enforcement-asized. As a kid, I recall the NPS being very friendly and service oriented but have noticed a change in their posture since 9/11. Not all, a lot of the older rangers are still pretty friendly people but the younger ones act like d-bag state troopers with a power trip.

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

one thing I would like to know is how you close a stone structure, that does nothing.

It's easy, really. You pay people to put up barriers there, and then you pay other people to make sure nobody goes around the barriers, and then you blame the republicans for shutting down the government by not giving you enough money to operate the stone structure that doesn't normally have any operational costs.

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

Gee, wasn't it Bush who refused to testify to the 911 Panel unless Daddy Dick came along?

Bush isn't in charge of the National Park Service.

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

No. That never happened.

Bush years Amnesia. It's a common ailment among the Right.

Joint Bush-Cheney testimony is a concession for 9/11 panel Members opted to break an investigatory tradition - question separately - to get Bush on board. - Philly.com

President Bush's plan to appear before the Sept. 11 commission with Vice President Cheney at his side violates a fundamental rule of investigations, but the panel accepted the unusual arrangement to get Bush's cooperation.

Of course, you might just be lying.

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

Ah yes. The Commission actually had no right to question either, but GWB offered in the spirit of openness. Took place in the WH, which is why I didn't recall.:peace

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

That 9/11 commission was nothing more than another bad joke played on American taxpayers.

Re: House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

Now that the GOP has been completely humiliated by Obama, I hope they hold those investigation -- to make sure the American people remember just how badly the Republicans lost on this issue due to the resolve of the Democrats.
