CHAOS in DC

You're either trying to hijack a thread or it's a sever cases of thread drift.

The topic of the thread is about the chaos in our nations capital today not the chaos that took place in Saigon fifty years ago.

Stream of conciousness debating, it's sweeping the nation.
Back to our regular schedule...

Cheap shot. That was a Buddhist monk protesting war.
But you knew that.

He wasn't protesting a war but the corrupt Diem regime and the Catholics being the minority running the government.

In 1963 the war was still in the communist terrorist stage. The real war would start a couple years later when the NVA would enter the RVN.

I hate to say it, I really do, but apacherat is correct here. He was not protesting a war, although Vietnam had been experiencing "real war" well before 1963 and the North Vietnam - South Vietnam conflict that would later be known as the Vietnam War had already started, although because the nature of that conflict changed dramatically once the US ramped up its involvement from advisement to full blown combat operations many people make the mistake of thinking the war started when the US entered it. Truth is North and South Vietnam had been fighting long before that, mostly in the form of North Vietnamese backed insurgents and communist guerrillas operating in the South fighting a low-intensity conflict

I haven't heard that since back on the old Politico.

Are you one of the Politico refuges ?

No. I'm a Usenet refugee. Usenet was a wonderful communication platform until it was killed by the 'eternal-september' syndrome.

That was a long time ago I suppose ?

Never used Usenet but along with porn it helped get the WWW. off and going.

Back during the late 90's the first forum I ever participated was C-SPAN's community forum. I believe it was in 2001 or 02 that C-Span gave it the coup de grace. :(

It had little if no moderation because for one it was a political forum, First Amendment was the rule. And it didn't need any moderation because the members back then were civil. It was more of exchanging opinions than debating.

But the former Politico Community Forum was something else. No moderation what so ever. I think if there was 50 or a 100 complaints of a post or user the Politico would send someone into the forum to take a look. It was a perfect example of exercising the First Amendment.

Sometimes if not daily it would put the DP unmentionable place down below to shame.

What killed the Politico forum was spamming and the Politico not willing to spend the money to end the spamming.

I can't figure it out, it's as if most don't give a ####.

It could be that they haven't yet stopped to think about how it will eventually affect them. Sadly, come the day when it does, it will probably be too late for them to do anything to help themselves and their families.

Greetings, APACHERAT. :2wave:

Consider what happens when the State controls Public Education, generation after generation.

We got a republic because Americans, especially successful Americans questioned and challenged Authority.

However, any ruling class has a vested interest in a compliant citizenry. It stands to reason that they very traits that made us a free people would be culled out of the people at large when the political upper class has the means to accomplish that. And so, we have an electorate now that eschews thought, analysis, individuality, exceptionalism and arithmetic.

Very good points made. We don't have to wonder what comes next...it's becoming apparent.

Greetings, Oftencold. :2wave:

Never used Usenet but along with porn it helped get the WWW. off and going.

Back in the day, the internet had three components, Usenet, FTP and WWW. Usenet and FTP were mostly used by university students, FTP for file sharing and Usenet for discussion. Every September a new generation of users had to be taught the self-governing protocols of Usenet newsgroups but somewhere along the line it was discovered by the great unwashed masses and the abuses became intolerable to the old regulars- the 'eternal-september' syndrome.
It was a great forum. Unmoderated, and I still have habits from the late 90's and Usenet that get in the way in WWW groups.

Sounds much like Usenet.
I miss the unmoderated self-governed anarchy of the early internet. If you got consistantly out of line you were jumped on and shaken by the ears and if you proved yourself unable to play nicely you were killfiled by the group- cast into outer darkness where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth.

... that's certainly not my President you're talking about, but I've always preferred strong executives who rule from the center.

If the Founding Fathers had wanted the President to be a tool of the legislators, they wouldn't have given him the power of veto.
And if the founders had wanted an Imperial President, they would not have given Congress the power to override that veto with a 2/3s majority.

Washington DC like the South Side of Chicago are violent places. But the last time I remember an American setting himself on fire in protest was in front of the Pentagon during the Vietnam war.

It's interesting that the last three significant violent events to happen in Washington DC over the past few weeks has an Obama connection.

Well I have to run halfway down the mountain to notify the owner of a mountain lodge that the U.S. Forest Service received orders from DC and just closed down a highway leading from L.A. to cut down on the business that the lodge would be getting this weekend. Obama is going way out of the way to inflict an inconvenience on Americans just because he can't get 100 % of his budget. It's just pathetic, what say you ?

The "clean" CR that Boner won't put up to a vote has 100% of what Republicans wanted for a budget. The Dems wanted 80 billion more to restore programs crippled by the sequester. That's what hppens when you compromise with Republicans, they lie and shoot you in the back.

Anyone who decides to set themselves on fire obviously has, or had some mental health problems.

I see trying to use a sad incident like this for political purposes as way over the line, but I am not surprised that some far right losers would do this.

As a matter of fact, I would be surprised if they didn't do this.

First Repubs cheer for Putin and Syria and Iran.
Then, they criticize Obama for talking to them which didn't happen much last decade.
Now they're cheering dubious reports that hurt America.
Then they act indignant when called TEAterrorists.

None of those things happened on a scale large enough for your to brand all Tea Party people "terrorists".

I didn't cheer Putin. I was embarrassed for the ineptitude of our president.

I didn't criticize him for talking to "them", I criticized him for being more willing to talk to Putin and Iran than he was his fellow citizens.

Who is cheering the news of a hurt American?

And I am indignant because you see fit to throw the name of "terrorist" around over policy disputes.
