Oh I think I understand the hot mic syndrome. People like Rand Paul actually saying the truth because they don't think the public is listening. So he and Mitch admit that maybe if they keep saying something that they know isn't true, the public might ultimately support them or at least their extremist base will and be tricked into blaming the Democrats.

    Is that about right?

You are confused as to what was said.
There was no admitting to saying untrue things.
That is nothing more than your spin.
There were making comment on their surprise at the spin that was being produced.

I've watched the vid clip, including the HuffPo reporter's brief analysis and don't understand how what the two men said is being interpreted as "cynical."

Where did he say that OTHER than from you making assumptions and putting words in his mouth? I imagine both sides are caring about "winning" BECAUSE they think winning will ultimately be what's best for America, not in spite of it. I think it's laughably ridiculous (shocker that I'M the one called cynical in this thread) to think that any of our politicians are sitting there going "Mwhahaha, this will be ****ty for America but it helps ME WIN! And THAT'S What matters, MWHAHAHA".

The thing that is most telling is Rand Paul saying "We're going to win this I think". It just shows how absolutely delusional he is!

If anything, the conversation seemed to suggest that they were largely affirmed in their negotiation stance and that they were convinced that CNN or others had not polled Americans if it was acceptable for Democrats to say they would not negotiate on this shutdown.

wait a minute.. why are you claiming they are "saying something they know isn't true" ?

don't interject your opinion into their exchange or assume you know what they believe.. it's dishonest.

but of course they are cynical... being a cynic is a requirement for professional politicians... along with being a skilled liar.

that all depends on what they get out of the negotiations...I think it's delusional to think they won't win something.

they probably won't get everything they want, but they'll get concessions and so will Democrats.

There are not going to be any negotiations. They are losing badly in the public opinion forum. They are ultimately going to have to do damage control. It is completely delusional that they can win anything at this point unless there is a huge wave of change in public opinion which is highly unlikely.
