One of the first teams of heavily armed police to respond to Monday's shooting in Washington DC was ordered to stand down by superiors, the BBC can reveal.

A tactical response team of the Capitol Police, a force that guards the US Capitol complex, was told to leave the scene by a supervisor instead of aiding municipal officers.

This would be hard to criticize, in my opinion. They may have felt they had enough response -- or had no way for everyone deployed to communicate with everyone else. THAT short-coming could spell disaster.

No criticism here without more information.

I just see a trend!

That's all you see?

Well we knew you wouldn't see anything. SADUYA!!

You don't even know what your defending at this point, but if it opposes anything I have to say your on it, troll.

Re: Navy Yard: Swat Team 'Stood Down' at mass shooting scene

When they say "One of the first teams of heavily armed police to respond to Monday's shooting " does that mean they were part of other teams arriving there initially?

I guess it needs to be establish if other tactical arrived at the same time. If they were the only tactical team to arrive it seems odd they would call them back.

I have a question for you: do you think the BBC is mainstream media?

What does that even mean? There was clearly a miscommunication, which is being vigorously investigated. What exactly are you attempting to portray here? The allegations were first made by the BBC, which cited an unnamed source. Until the investigation is complete and all radio logs reviewed, we don't actually know what happened.

This is so ridiculous! This absolutely shows how law enforcement teams and departments everywhere are basically "damned if you do, damned if you don't". Had they gone in, and anything looked wrong, including them just going in being many against just the one shooter, we would be hearing how they overreacted and/or overstepped what their job entails.

Re: Navy Yard: Swat Team 'Stood Down' at mass shooting scene

Just read the OP's article.

1. I would wait for the investigation to finish before rushing to judgement.
"Gwendolyn Crump, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police Department, which protects the city of Washington DC, said allegations that a Capitol Police Cert team was on scene and later stood down were "not true".

"Capitol Hill Police chief Kim Dine has ordered "a comprehensive, independent review of the facts surrounding the Capitol Police's response to the Navy Yard shootings".

2. The UK article quotes " a Capitol Police source ", but never identifies who this person is.
I tend to be skeptical with unknown sources.

3. Papers tend to look for the shocking headlines.

4. I prefer to wait till the investigation and review is done to come to any conclusion.

Retreat seems to be a standing order in the Obama government.

I don't think anyone is going to fault LEO's for trying. I, for one, will very swiftly begrudge someone for not trying.

Generally I would agree with you. It should be the smart thing to do. But it may not turn out that way.

The federal government, run by Obama, is involved. One thing his administration has made clear, they won't really investigate anything if there is any chance they may not look good in the outcome. Based on it's record, the "fix' is already in motion.

Many do in fact. Just look at some of the other threads in the Law and Order section complaining about what SWAT teams or other LEOs do. I go with allow LE officers to make the decisions. They handled the situation obviously, since the guy is dead. And it is wrong to sit back and try to criticize a law enforcement decision that no one can really say would have been best without a whole hell of a lot more facts.

And trying to blame this on Obama is just more partisan politics. I absolutely guarantee that this was not his call at all being made if they were told to stand down and wait, likely for more information on exactly what was happening. Hindsight is 20/20.

Claiming that NOTHING is EVER Obama's fault is just as partisan.

Good morning, apdst. :2wave:

A big AMEN to that!

I don't claim that nothing is ever Obama's fault, but this is not one that is. He has nothing to do with calls that are made about SWAT teams in general. So unless you have solid proof otherwise, you are making a horrible assumption that this is his fault based purely on his partisanship. There is plenty that is that man's fault, but it is just plain wrong to blame him for everything.

The shoe fits buddy. It's all about the mentality of the people you appoint as your senior staff, and how they end up commanding their posts.

The shoe does fit.

Re: Navy Yard: Swat Team 'Stood Down' at mass shooting scene

A mentally-ill man goes on a rampage, police agencies screw up their internal communication during the crisis... and it's all Obama's fault. Honest to god, some people only use their brains for a set decoration.
