President Obama must promise not to arm rebel forces or Syrian dictator Bashar Assad will not hand over his chemical weapons, the embattled leader told a Russian state media outlet today while demanding that Israel also surrender its nuclear arsenal.

“When we see that the U.S. genuinely stands for stability in our region, stops threatening us with military intervention and stops supplying terrorists with weapons, then we will consider it possible to finalize all necessary procedures and they will become legitimate and acceptable for Syria," Assad told RIA News.

Screw this guy. Just let the cruise missiles fly.

Talk like this suggests the disarmament plan is nothing but a play for time.

The terrorists cannot continue to be armed by the US if they wish for peace in Syria.

Therefore, it's best to just let Assad's forces kill people left and right without resistance?

This is a no win situation for the US. If we help the rebels, we risk the extremists coming in. We should just mind our own business for once.

Obama has messed this up to the Nth degree. There is no way the US can extricate itself from this situation without looking weak or militant. When it comes to this situation, I regret voting for him. History will remember him as the great appeaser of the 21st century.

Imagine the leader of that worthless country giving orders to the President of the United States.

The overriding theme behind all of this byplay is how silly and childlike Obama looks on an international stage with adults that are ridiculing him.

Still trying to tie Obama's hands. You guys in the GOP just won't quit helping America's enemies.

The US could have helped with that problem 2-1/2 years ago, its late now. Best thing is to stop arming the terrorists. I thought we were fighting a war on terror. Assad is now fighting his own war on terror, and the US is interfering. So, pass this one to Putin, let him deal with it. I love how people stand on that moral ground of we have to help the civilians by wishing to arm terrorists who are killing civilians.

This is exactly what I expected; especially the demand of Israel. That came from Iran.

You may be correct. This is getting out of hand and it will only get worse, since Russia and Iran are on the side of Assad not for his benefit, but for theirs.

Assad could have been an ally of the US. Getting rid of him will create a power vacuum that Iran and Al Qaeda will fight over, with Russia on the side of Iran, which they will win. And then... then... Israel will be in true danger, given that the current US leadership will not take on Russia or Iran, much less both at the same time. Saudi Arabia and all the other Sunni nations will be on the side of Al Qaeda.

The terrorists cannot continue to be armed by the US if they wish for peace in Syria.

There's no good option, only bad and worse. We should be supporting Assad, giving him Billions of dollars, and demanding in return his expulsion of Iranian and Shiite militants. Then we could help him fight Sunni militants (Al Qaeda, Al Nussra, etc.), get control of and destroy his chemical weapons in the process. We would put Putin in a box, and cut Iran off at the knees with their ability to threaten the Arab nations, while gaining a secular ally in the region. Turkey would help us. Jordan would help us. And who knows whom else, maybe even Russia.

Dude! We don't risk them coming in, they're in. The CIA has been training them and arming them in camps in both Jordan and Turkey and sending them in.

Obama has been helping Americas enemies! They were installed in Egypt, then Libya and he's trying to get them in power in Syria.

Of course it is a play for time, it never was anything else. What did anyone expect Assad to do? Obama has painted himself into a corner, the UN will never say go, congress will never say go so it is then up to Obama to either stand down or have his dopey "mini war" which will not remove Assad from power, but will leave Syria a more complete mess.

I figured the whole thing was a ruse between Assad and Putin to buy time for Syria to shift its chemical weapon stockpiles. Lying assholes are lying assholes, film at 11:00.

Montecresto - Facts have no place in this discussion or for that matter any discuss about potential mistakes this administration has made regarding it's foreign policy. You most only use MSM approved pro-Obama tag lines when discussing GOP created issues that the president has dealt with in "a most glorious fashion".

"The United States accepts no preconditions for Syria relinquishing the chemical weapons it used against civilians in recent attacks. Either Assad makes the right decision and gives up his illegal, indiscriminate weapons, or he continues down the path of ignoring international law and the will of the world community. If so, the U.S. will use force to punish him, and to send a message to other tyrants who would use illegal weapons. You will not get away with it."

My suggested text of a speech Obama will never give.

Plus the MB has sent in their Golden Shield Brigade. Now who do you think was training them?

Well that didn't last long. I guess star-eyed Putin sympathizers can now wake back up to reality after, what, 4 days or so? Just enough time for Russia to flood arms into Syria on a scale that dwarfs our own. Brilliant, foreign policy advisers to the Pres. Brilliant.

I guess every time you guys say that, I'll say this. It has not been PROVEN that president Assad used chemical weapons on his civilians.

What do you mean. He said that the US must stop arming the terrorists in his country if they want his cooperation.

Which tells Iran they can do whatever they want. People I think are making the mistake of looking at Syria in isolation.

Actually, this has relatively little to do with moral high ground. We let Assad go on this and play by Russia's rules and Iran will keep moving on their program because they know we wouldn't even bomb Syria, they have little to fear from us. That leads to a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

You cannot fight a war on an ideal unless you kill off everything capable of holding that ideal. The world where Russia sets the rules is a world that is bad for everyone.

Heya Dianna. :2wave: Yep.....it was nothing but a play for more time. Even though this doesn't change the fact that Kerry and Obama got outplayed. Out maneuvered and outwitted. All due to their own words and actions. Obama wasn't talking to Putin and then Kerry left himself open playing to the Cameras and thinking his was the man of honor.

Assad also said his government will start submitting data on its chemical weapons stockpile a month after signing the convention banning such weapons.

Syria's U.N. ambassador Bashar Ja'afari told reporters Thursday that he presented Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon with "the instrument of accession" to the Chemical Weapons Convention making his country a full member of the treaty banning the use of chemical weapons.

The treaty states that a nation becomes a party 30 days after such a letter is submitted.

U.N. associate spokesman Farhan Haq said the secretary-general welcomes the development.

He said that Syria is relinquishing control over its chemical weapons because of Russia.

"We agreed to put Syria's chemical weapons under international supervision in response to Russia's request and not because of American threats," Assad said.

"In my view, the agreement will begin to take effect a month after its signing, and Syria will begin turning over to international organizations data about its chemical weapons," Assad added. He said this is "standard procedure" and that Syria will stick to it.

"There is nothing standard about this process," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry retorted in Geneva, because Assad has used his chemical weapons. "The words of the Syrian regime in our judgment are simply not enough."

Assad said the Russian deal was a two-sided process. "We are counting, first of all, on the United States stop conducting the policy of threats regarding Syria," he said.

Syria's Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil also suggested on Thursday that the Russian proposal will succeed only if the United States and its allies pledge not to attack Syria in the future.

"We want a pledge that neither it (the U.S.) nor anyone else will launch an aggression against Syria," Jamil told The Associated Press in Damascus.

But Kerry cautioned that a U.S. military strike could occur if Assad doesn't agree to dismantle his chemical arsenal properly. "There ought to be consequences if it doesn't take place," he said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, however, said the dismantling "will make unnecessary any strike against the Syrian Arab Republic.".....snip~

Assad: Syria to offer data on chemical weapons

Course the rebel/terrorists have rejected the Russian proposal and are speaking out. Although they are now not considered the official ruling government of Syria like the French and the Brits recognized. Despite their statement released thru the Pan Arab broadcasts.

What bothers me here is Kerry once again steps into it. As now he is railing despite what the procedure is with the UN and dealing with Chems.

Now you can see why.....Team Obama was completely outplayed. As the Russians knew the time table with the UN Procedures. Once we agreed to let Assad due this. Then what can we do but wait until we see if they comply with the UN Procedures and follow thru?

Uh...you do realize that Saudi Arabia has and is undergoing state crackdowns of extremist that favor AQ right? Why do people not understand this? AQ wants the House of Saud gone as much as they want us gone. Only Qatar has no problems getting into bed with the extremists. The Saudis and the other Gulf States will favor the the secularist and moderate fighters. Not AQ.

Israel could be in less danger as the fall of Assad reduces the strength of Hezbollah. Some nutjob on another thread tried to argue that the removal of Assad would make Hezbollah stronger. I asked him how they'd get money and weapons. He never gave an answer.

We let Assad go on this and we become a paper tiger. How do you think Iran is going to view that?

Of course it is a play for time, it never was anything else.

Sadly, some people in Congress can't figure that out.

What did anyone expect Assad to do? Obama has painted himself into a corner, the UN will never say go

More accurately, Russia and China will never allow it.

congress will never say go so it is then up to Obama to either stand down or have his dopey "mini war" which will not remove Assad from power, but will leave Syria a more complete mess.

If the strikes result in both sides wearing each other down relatively equally, that simply accelerates the end of the war at the same time not making us a paper tiger. We don't actually want to remove Assad until the extremest elements in the Syrian rebels are diminished. It may be possible to do both at the same time.
