You mistake respect for being liked. A common flaw among liberals.

International respect largely comes from fear. They'll never love you because they don't want to love you. That's what you don't get. The only thing they respect is strength and power. Period.

That's the real world. The kumbaya you want doesn't exist.

More like, people are so desperate to run from the embarassing truth. It's unreal.

Agree. Assad came out of this much stronger than he went into it. The middle east now has a new top dog, it's Russia. That of course empowers Iran and all the terrorist organizations they support and control. No telling how all the other countries will react to this but it won't be good for the US or the middle east.

So yes. We should hang our heads in shame for electing a community agitator President. The entire Syrian misadventure that effects the rest of the world, was created by him and him alone. Lots of people are going to end up dead that didn't have to because we won't be looked to for stability functions. At least for three more years.

Yes, every leader that agrees to give up their WMd's ends up stronger as a result. Just look at how well it worked out for Saddam.

Why in the world would you call me a liberal? People who fear you, fear you! Do you respect anyone you fear. Respect is earned, and you don't earn respect by twisting on people's ears. You have a fantasy.

Re: Putin uses NYT Op-Ed to warn US against Syria strike

Russia is petrified over the potential fall of Assad, since the rebels despise Russia for its support of him. Assad's ouster would mean the end of Russia's influence in the area as well as significant trade (especially in arms).

So Russia wants to do anything to avoid a US strike while pretending to look strong. It fact it's got an incredibly weak hand and there is virtually nothing Putin can do to stop the US from pummeling Assad into submission if the US wants to. That's why Putin is acting so aggressive. Fear and weakness.

It doesn't mean Russia doesn't have legitimate interests in the region or that its position is "wrong". There just isn't much it can do besides block UN votes and hope for a peaceful resolution that leaves Assad or one of his lackeys in power.

Those who read the entire op-ed piece should see that president Putin didn't disrespect the US but he did point out truths that are embarrassing. That the US ignores the UN when they don't get their way, that the US uses brute force to interfere with nations internal conflicts, that the US is arming extremist groups that our own state department has designated as terrorist groups and that in the process the US is violating international law. Not really much to argue with.

No, these are interest fields. Where is your position in it that matters?
