Syria welcomes Russia's offer to put its chemical weapons under Int'l control

So here it is. Syria willing to put its cache of chemical weapons under the control of international authorities, with the possibility of future destruction of them with Syria joining the ban. SO...............Kerry said they could avoid US military intervention if they did just that, now then, will this really back the administration up?

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has welcomed Russia’s call to hand control over its chemical weapons to the international community.

“Syria Arab Republic welcomes Russia’s initiative, based on the Syrian’s government care about the lives of our people and security of our country,” Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said in response to the statement by his Russian counterpart.

“We are calling on the Syrian authorities not only agree on putting chemical weapons storages under international control, but also for its further destruction and then joining the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons,” Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier.

First of all, a defector has already told the international community that he has 700 tons and 300 delivery rounds. Secondly, it would appear that Assad could make no concession that wouldn't be called insincere, which is what those that are determined on "regime change" would say regardless of what he offers. Once again because, and especially that Russia is the sponsor of this, it would further evidence both Putin and Assad's desire to avoid inflaming the entire region. THIS move is exactly what Kerry said would enable Assad to avoid US military attack. So lets see now if the admin. Mans up.

Ok, now we'll see if this really is about chemical weapons, or if that was just an excuse. The next days will tell. If the US government refused this quasi-capitulation from Assad, it would be proof that the chemical weapons were indeed just an excuse.

Allowing your opponant to bow out gracefully is not manning up.
    Let that happen.
But man up and say "Syria has agreed to terms to avoid further US intervention that was not supported by the international community or the people here at home".

This doesn't change the fact that Assad killed tens of thousands of civilians and gassed them. I'll give a crap about his concessions when he agrees to be tried before the ICC.

It may be, but calling it that on an international scale means saying Russia is lying, and until proven wrong (meaning a continued use of such weapons) I think they have more credibility than the dictator in charge here.

I think this just very embarrassing for obummer - and I'm glad. He deserves to be b.Slapped by the international community for calling it "their" red line and not his.

My sense is that the administration would be happy with this result. They may be able to pull back the resolution to use force which was about to be voted down by congress.

Perhaps the Russians were more helpful than people were willing to give them credit for.

Helpful would have been to do this before he gassed his people. There's not a "free one use" on chems. He killed 10s of 1000s.

Hopefully the Russians are securing the chems, they can have the oil infrastructure and port as well.
