1/5 th of the USN surface warships depart the Mediterranean Sea.

Obama must be a genius when it comes to fighting a war. Order 1/5th of your surface warships in the Mediterranean Sea to return home before the shooting starts.

"<The guided missile destroyer USS Mahan (DDG-72) has left the Eastern Mediterranean en route to its homeport at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., according to several press reports.

Mahan’s departure leaves four destroyers left to undertake an anticipated limited strike on Syria.

Mahan had a planned ballistic missile defense (BMD) deployment extended in the U.S. 6th fleet area of operations while it waited for the U.S. to take action against the regime of Bashar al-Assad for an alleged chemical weapons attack on Aug. 21.

Four destroyers — USS Stout (DDG-55), USS Ramage (DDG-61), USS Barry (DDG-52) and USS Gravely (DDG-107) — are left in Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) in range of Syrian targets.

There are also likely U.S. submarines in the region to assist in the attack, although the Navy does not typically discuss the positions of its submarine force. '<

    more con games????

ONE (1) ship is leaving the area.... count 'em ONE.

You are clueless on how many submarines are lurking with in range- as capable of launching a strike as the surface units and far better at avoiding retaliation.

This isn't an invasion, nor an attempt to wipe Syria off the map- I do believe the US Navy has enough missiles in the area to accomplish the mission.

20 % of our destroyers have departed the 6th Fleet AOR. Now there are only four destroyers in the 6th Fleet AOR. While the Russians have over 16 ships in the Eastern Mediterranean. And I'm sure the Russians also have sub hunter subs deployed in the area who's main purpose is hunting down and destroying American subs.

The bigger question is, why were the last eleven Presidents always had 24/7 a Carrier Battle Group/Carrier Strike Group of 1 carrier and a Carrier Air Wing aboard along with one or two cruisers and six to eight destroyers and one or two attack subs and also one Amphibious Ready Force with three amphibious ships and one Marine Corps MEU or BLT aboard ? Not to mention fleet auxiliaries such as oilers, replenishment ships and frigate escorts.

That's an easy question to answerer, Obama has allowed our navy to become a hollow Navy.

There probably wasn't enough money to refuel the USS Mahan at sea so she was ordered to return to Norfolk where the rest of the fleet is tied up to their wharfs unable to put to sea.

Why isn't there a CSG in the 6th Fleet AOR ?

I know exactly why because last month the Chief of Naval Operations explained why the carrier that is suppose to be the surge carrier isn't able to put to sea because the ship's crew aren't properly trained to go to sea. Probably because instead of training to go to sea they have been sitting in class rooms for their mandatory sensitivity training.

All right Admiral Wiggen, tell us what the disadvantages are of todays 5"/54 gun found on our destroyers and cruisers today compared to the old 5"/38 gun.

Ahh yes, more wailing and arm flailing... you really think the Russians are going to attack our ships?

Oh there is more than enough money to refuel the USS Mahan, you are just wolf whistling. You keep harping on some sensitivity training but for the life of me I can't see why a carrier can't do that at sea and why a couple of months makes that big a difference. I didn't forget how to be a grunt 2 months after leaving the service. We are not there to invade or bomb syria back to the stone age. You are stuck pretending it is 1968 instead of 2013.

    Oh good lord...

Did you know the Nimitz battle group is moving into the area? US Nimitz aircraft carrier 'headed closer to Syria'

That is one ship down, 6 + up. So much for your hysteria and ignorance.

Well if these Tomahawk VLSSCM's are of the Clinton era, don't be surprised if they take out an aspirin factory and the Russian Embassy in Syria. What would you do if you were Putin ? I believe there are 30,000 Russian civilians living in Syria today.

They are not. Entirely different guidance system. Once again, your ignorance is showing. Force size is going up, not down, missiles are not what you think...total failure on your part.

what, exactly, is the mission? a token missile attack on some abandoned buildings to save face?
