Really? Right now here in Washington state we've got a teachers' union strike going on. Now I know just the thought of that makes you angry how they're just destroying our kids' educations, right?
Come to find out,
the reason they're striking is because of budget cuts - cuts that will result in classrooms with 35-37 children...and if you've got half a clue about teaching, you know that the smaller the class size, the more individual attention the teacher will be able to give each student...and the better the education as a result.
With private schools you often have much smaller class sizes.
Now unions aren't perfect - NO organization is, and the fact that an organization isn't perfect is no reason to get rid of it (although that's what conservatives want to do with any non-conservative organization that has the least little imperfection). But you can't give kids a good education if you're unwilling to spend the money for that education - and this principle goes for private AND public schools. It's like the old saying: you get what you pay for. If you're not willing to pay the taxes necessary for a good public education, then the children in public schools will not get a good education. This is not a guarantee that more money automatically equals a good education, but insufficient money DOES almost guarantee an insufficient education.
Here, I'll give you
a GREAT example. Two years or so ago it was made known that 41% of ALL K-12 teachers in Texas were moonlighting. They were taking second jobs in order to make ends meet. So instead of teachers staying late after school to help students, to grade papers, to make the lesson plan for the next day, they were rushing to get to their second jobs.
And who suffers? The 40% or so of ALL Texas students that those teachers probably taught...and it was all because of education cuts.
If the teachers had a strong union in Texas, then 41% of their teachers wouldn't have to be moonlighting in order to feed, shelter, and clothe themselves and their families...and the schoolchildren would be getting more of the attention they desperately need. THIS is why the teachers unions are a very, very good thing.
