US readies possible missile strike against Syria - report

Despite President Obama cautioning against intervention in Syria, the Pentagon is making “initial preparations” for a cruise missile attack on Syrian government forces, according to a new report.Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey is expected to present options for such a strike at a White House meeting on Saturday, CBS News reported on Friday.

President Barack Obama is under renewed pressure to take action following the emergence of footage of what appears to be the aftermath of a toxic agent attack in a Damascus suburb on Wednesday. The forces of President Bashar Assad were assaulting a rebel stronghold in the district at the time, but deny responsibility. Moscow, which has maintained close ties with the regime, called the incident a rebel “provocation” possibly designed to derail upcoming Geneva peace talks.

Using cruise missiles and airpower seems to be the government's MO when they're not really capable - or have the political support for - doing much of anything substantive to affect the outcome or someone else's behavior. (See: Operation Deliberate Force, Operation Desert Fox/Desert Strike, etc.) I guess in the post-Iraq and Afghanistan era we're reverting back to what Col. Andrew Bacevich called the "Gunboats and Gurkhas" strategy.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

Yeah, the Russians and Assad should be allowed to kill as many civilians as they want, by any means. Stopping them would be horrible.

So Obama is going to play tough and honor his red line statement by shooting million dollar missiles at tents huh, gee that sounds vaguely familiar.

Why should Obomba change his routine?

The last democrat president exhausted our supply of cruise missiles, causing some to be so irate, they flew airplanes into building. What will the repercussions of this president be?

It is one distinct possibility. The first time in '93, they didn't succeeded. In '01, they did.

Clinton was relentless in attacking the middle-east with cruise missiles. Nothing is more infuriating than having an attacker stays at a distance that can't be reached.

O-bomb-a seems determined to unite factions against us for our spineless help over there.

Wouldn't that be 'a defender that stays at a distance'?

Excellent. I hope that we intend to target their capability to coordinate WMD attacks on Civilians, and their integrated air defense systems.
