Edward Snowden's e-mail Provider Abruptly Shuts Down, cites Government Interference

Lavabit email service abruptly shut down citing government interference | Technology | theguardian.com

Snowden's email provider, Lavabit, shutters citing legal pressure | PCWorld

Apparently the owner decided to shut the company down rather than cooperate with what he clearly sees as unconstitutional demands from the government.

I read he shut down his company.

There could be other reasons for shutting it down however.

Read the letter on Lavabit proper. It's pretty damning.

Shutting down the business only prevents the government from demanding info about any future e-mail traffic, it doesn't absolve Lavabit of having to provide information on traffic already handled. I'm sure that Lavabit, like Snowden and Assange before them, are going to attract all the right attention of all the right people and have a pretty big defense fund pretty quick to handle the mountain of litigation they are about to face.

Wiki says, as reported by Wired, that Lavasoft complied with a search warrant for information about a child pornography suspect.

I applaud dropping their concerns about privacy when it came to crimes being committed, but I question where they are drawing the line. If a child porn suspect isn't innocent until proven guilty, why is Snowden, or anyone like him?

Maybe because Lavasoft wouldn't get good publicity for standing up for a child porn suspect, but it would for an NSA whistleblower?

Even the ACLU defended the Skokie Nazis...

At least there is one good man in america, one good man who respects constitutional principles.

The actions of Lavabit show how UNprincipled the vast majority of the other providers are. Sad story for the USA.

Probable cause. The blanket warrants are warrants in name only.

We should not have blanket warrants and we cannot trust the government having unrestricted access to our content to our emails for various reasons.

In this case the ACLU would stand with Lavasoft since the rights of its users are being threatened for no reason.

The complete obliteration of American privacy might be the highlight of the Obama administration.

There are judges that hear reasons for these secret warrants, and judge their validity based on secret testimony. These are not ordinary felony crminial code cases being investigated, they are interests of national security, and thus must in many cases be secret. But there are checks and balances.

My point about the ACLU is about constitutional rights for all, not just for some.
