Now that is scary. People being so intimidated that they start submitting to the nonsense the SVP comes up with. Sometimes I feel like climbing on every single swiss mountain and replacing all the summit crosses with summit minarets.

Exactly. The Swiss are so lazy they couldn't come up with their own language, and had to butcher the ones of their neighbours. The only valuable thing I have ever learned from a Swiss citizen, in Ramatuelle, is how to roll a joint backward and get rid of the extra paper. Telling. Every single year they have to come to our shores and polute them with their insufferable beings. Why don't they stay in their country if it's so great, huh? I for one have only been there once, and by inadvertance: I was skiing in Avoriaz, missed a gate, and ended up in Switzerland - never again!

You're jumping to rash conclusions again. These are not people that need to fear anything. They're Swiss citizens, no one is going to boot them out of the country. The vast majority of Swiss Muslims are very moderate to quite secular. They place little importance on minarets or head coverings. I'm also not convinced that the majority vote was anti-Muslim at its core. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure plenty of idiots saw this vote as a way to express anti-Muslim sentiments, but the majority of people I talked to at time said that they simply didn't want the Swiss landscape, this beautiful country they're so proud of, to change in any way. There was a vote last year on the construction of secondary, holiday homes in certain areas of the country which was flatly and firmly rejected as well. They do not want their beloved scenery marred in any way. On that, I must say I completely agree with them.

So that's where all the Swiss losers go on vacation! I always wondered about that...

Just kidding. I love you guys.

Then why do they vote for a ban on minarets and not a ban on high-rise appartment blocks? This is ridiculous. Of course it's about people not wanting to see any signs of islam in their country, and of course they're not going to tell you "I hate muslims".

We don't need a ban on high rise apartment blocks. Our very strict zoning and construction laws take care of that. There are entire towns and villages where you literally can't build anything higher than 3 stories. Which is why I voted against the ban. They couldn't build those minarets because of existing laws anyway. Stupid law is stupid and unnecessary. And please don't act like you know Swiss people better than I do. It's tiresome. I did admit that for some it was anti-Muslim, mostly to SVP/UDC voters, but not for everyone.

You do realize that the socialists have both the presidency and a supermajority? You need to come back to reality pal.

I don't claim to know the Swiss better than you, but the scenery argument really did sound laughable. But yes, maybe that degree of pettiness really does exist.

If there hadn't been other instances where the Swiss voted to protect their scenery, I would be more prone to agree that the vote was solely xenophobic in nature. But they do take definite steps to protect the environment time and time again; often spending extra millions in order for new construction to blend in seamlessly with the local scenery, even putting the breaks on lucrative projects just because they may damage the environment. I'm sorry if you find this petty, I find it admirable. This country is beautiful for a reason. The people who live in it do all they can to keep it that way. Believe it or not, that was one of the reasons some people voted for the ban. They didn't really understand that it would have been next to impossible in most places to build those minarets anyway.
