White House seeks to transfer two Gitmo prisoners to Algeria

The Department of Defense has notified Congress of its intention to return two Guantanamo Bay detainees to their homeland of Algeria, the White House said Friday.

“Today the Department of Defense certified to Congress its intent to repatriate an additional two detainees to Algeria,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. “We are taking this step in consultation with the Congress, and in a responsible manner that protects our national security.”

Watch the teabaggers demagogue this as "soft on terrorism" and then crow that Obama hasn't kept his promise to close Gitmo, even though it was GOP demagoguery that kept it open.

I'm a little confused. That doesn't sound like release, nor does it sound like these people are charged with any offense under Algerian law. Are these people going to be protected in Algeria, or are we just handing them over so someone else can abuse them and we keep our hands clean?

If we had intelligent people running our government, we would microchip GITMO detainees (unknowing to them) and allow them to lead us to terror cells.

Of course democrats would be opposed to such a clever trick while they call for Snowdens head on a pike.

sounds to me like they will be detained there for a bit and probably released when nobody is looking.

Well, GITMO detainees aren't US citizens. Our constitution and Bill of Rights doesn't apply to them.

I'm a libertarian because I defend the ideas our founding fathers manifested and I don't allow alternative opinions/ideas cloud what our founding fathers envisioned as a society..

Other nations can do whatever the **** they want - it's up to their populace to revolt/coup or legislate their civil rights.

I see so you're all about "Life, love, liberty, understanding, knowledge, Wisdom" for people as long as they came out of a pussy within your borders that were created by murder, racism and slavery.

    Got it.

Look, it's up to the people in other nations if they want civil liberties.

The only way civil liberties can mean anything to anyone is if they fight for them.... Those that are truly oppressed need to earn their civil liberties from governments that oppress them with an authoritarian or totalitarian hand.

We did that here in the US, hence our constitution and Bill of Rights.
