"If nothing changes in Iran, come September, October, I will present a resolution that will authorize the use of military force to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb,"

Lindsey Graham Wants War with Iran at the End of the Summer - Connor Simpson - The Atlantic Wire

There have been several moves by Congress and the Senate within the last few years pushing us in this direction. Our alliance with Israel has been tightened as a result. Unless there is a major mistake made, I don't see us or the Israelis allowing Iran to get the bomb.

"If nothing changes, I will introduce legislation to burnish my conservative credentials right before the Tea Party has to register a guy to challenge me in a primary."

He is running for re-election in 2014.

That would be so wrong. :doh

What's with the undeclared war thing?

Why is Congress so chicken-**** about just declaring war?
Is there some procedural thing which make "authorization of force" so much better?
To this layman, what we did in Iraq seems indistinguishable from war.

Oh my god. they just had an election. The ayatollah in Iran is anti-nuclear weapons. Let them have a bloody dialogue with the new president of Iran.

Also, this is just pro-war propaganda to help him look tough when he's going to speak to his pro-war constituency. He's an asshole.

I'm sure it's part of our infinity war, though end of summer may be too soon. I would not be surprised to see it within the year or so.

Had this come from a serious Senator, it might be worth highlighting and cause concern. I'm guessing Lindsay has a new outfit, perfect for declaring war from the cheap seats, and he doesn't want it to go to waste.

I'm of the belief that it will happen one day or another.

I certainly hope not. But I don't think that such a move would put us on much more of a "war" footing with Iran than we already are.

:doh the Supreme Leader is the same guy as before the election: Grand Ayatollah Khamenei. He and the new President Rousani are both pro-nuclear-weapons.

Let them have a bloody dialogue with the new president of Iran.

the new President of Iran is the old chief nuclear negotiator for Iran, who authored the idea that Iran should use negotiations to string out western nations while it continues to develop nuclear weapons so that it can present them with a fate accompli. "Having a bloody dialogue" with him is the same thing as "let's just let them have the Bomb."

Yes, the Supreme leader is still the ayatollah khamenei... who rules for life. But he is not pro-nuclear weapons. He has actually given one of those fatwah or whatnaught banning nuclear weapons in Iran.

I did not know that the new president is the old chief of the nuclear negotiator for Iran. this is new information... well, I don't know what to think yet about this.
+1 like for teaching me smth new ;)

:doh and if you believe that, I have some fantastic beachfront property in Kansas to sell you.

for once, PBS gets it right. The Supreme Leader (like virtually everyone else in Iranian politics) is pro-nuclear weapons, as they see it as the ultimate defense against the West, counter to Israel, and umbrella for their reassertion of regional hegemony.

:) Yup. Rouhani is Rafsanjani's boy. Everyone is dancing around talking about how this makes him "the moderate", forgetting that that phrase means something very different in Iranian politics than it does in Western politics, especially when it comes to their nuclear program.

Al jazeera is a pro-sunni news outlet. Of course they would smear the image of any shia. They hate each other a lot. I can't say if the fact that this guy was the former chief of nuclear negotiations is a good thing or not. I haven't made up my mind yet... I just found out 5min ago from your post.

Anyway. No, I don't think that's true. The fatwa is real, I assure you. And it prohibits the development, stockpiling and gathering of nuclear arsenal.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's fatwa 'should end nuclear weapons debate', says Iran - The National

Ramin Mehmanparast, a ministry spokesman, said the West must understand the significance of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's edict for Iran, saying "there is nothing higher than the exalted supreme leader's fatwa to define the framework for our activities in the nuclear field".

Why would he issue, what esentially is a religious order, only to then violate it? It would be incredibly cynical of him and mean that he has no respect for his religion. I doubt that's true.

While I don't disagree that al-Jazeera is pro-sunni, here is the full text from the al-jazeera article cited:

Iran's former moderate president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has endorsed ally Hassan Rouhani in the June 14 election, saying the candidate is "more suitable" than others for the presidency.

Rouhani was Iran's former top nuclear negotiator under former president Mohammad Khatami and served as top security official under Rafsanjani.

"I will vote for Dr Rouhani, who entered the race after consulting me," Rafsanjani said in remarks reported by ILNA news agency on Tuesday.

"I consider him to be more suitable (than other candidates) to steer the executive branch," he said referring to the slate of five other hopefuls, most of whom are conservatives.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mohammad-Reza Aref, the sole reformist candidate in the presidential vote, withdrew from the race after receiving advice from Khatami, his website has reported.

"At dusk on Monday... I received a letter from Mohammad Khatami... he said it would not be wise for me to remain in the race," Aref wrote in his withdrawal statement on Tuesday.

In recent days, calls have grown from within the reformist camp for Aref to quit in favour of Rouhani.

Aref 's withdrawal from the race is the second in two days.

Ex-parliamentary speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel, seen as close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, pulled out of the race on Monday without endorsing any of the four remaining conservatives standing for election.

He was not considered a frontrunner in the presidential poll.

Khatami's advisory council in a statement threw their backing behind Rouhani as the "reformist camp candidate".

Feel free to point out the smears.

They hate each other a lot. I can't say if the fact that this guy was the former chief of nuclear negotiations is a good thing or not. I haven't made up my mind yet... I just found out 5min ago from your post.

Well it's as real as the strategy he authored. The guy (like the Supreme Leader) is definitely pro-nuclear weapon. Hell, even large chunks (if not a majority, rather hard to poll) of the Green Movement is pro-nuclear weapon.

Anyway. No, I don't think that's true. The fatwa is real, I assure you. And it prohibits the development, stockpiling and gathering of nuclear arsenal.

 you discount al-jazeera as a source that Rouhani is an ally of Rasfanjani, yet accept without question an Iranian spokesmans' public interpretation of an unwritten and only loosely referred to fatwa?

Oh wow, well, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman exhibited precisely the kind of behavior that he would if he was engaging in the national strategy of obstufication (Taqiyya) in support of delay in order to argue that Iran was just a peace-loving bunch of pacifists. Obviously he's telling the truth :D.

 Do you also believe that everything Jay Carney says about the Obama administration is the absolute truth? Cmon, man. Actions speak louder than words, and there is good reason why Iran thinks that it is worth the punishment its' getting under the sanctions. Because it thinks (probably correctly) that the West is willing to opt for a strategy of "containment", and will either restrain Israel, or hamper it from taking the level of assault necessary to halt Iranian development; and that possession of nuclear weapons (again, probably correctly) is the guarantor of security from "regime removal" via the West, an equivalency measure against Israel, and an umbrella under which to extend regional hegemony.

Anywho, as per OP, I should probably note at this time that I agree that Lindsey Graham is an a-hole who is probably as much as anything seeking to cover his own reelection.

I feel better that Ahmadinejad has been given the boot however, that doesn't change the fact that the Iranian government consists of total whackjobs that would have no problem holding a nuke over the worlds head - threatening WWIII unless they're allowed to pull a holocaust pt II.

You don't give a gun to an unstable person that is bent to kill over trivial **** like religion.

But God forbid we do a background check to see if that person is unstable :)

Personally, I think that instability you perceive is really just Iran doing what Lindsey Graham is doing. Rattling the saber to look tough for the people. Iran knows that actually using a nuclear weapon is suicide. And you know what? People like the ayatollahs really like being in power. Suicide does not further that.
