When it comes to accepting federal funding, they apply rules. You're playing "naive" when you know this can and has been done.

Do you honestly support these type of zero tolerance rules in schools? Does it not bother you they refuse to change them despite public outcry?

Yes, I don't like Zero tolerance rules. But this law isn't targeting Zero tolerance rules, it is tolerating ONE Zero Tolerance rule.

However, it is a local matter for the people of that community to handle. Not a Federal issue.

Actually, I think it is dumb. You're an adult at 18 when it comes to voting, being in the military, screwing, buying smokes....But for beer you have to be 21.

First the drinking age/blood alcohol limit and don't forget 55mph speed limit had BIPARTISAN support in both house and Senate- you talk like this has a snow ball's chance in hell of becoming a federal law.

It doesn't matter what you think, or I think- it matters what both houses of Congress think and does the Supreme Court say it is Constitutional.

But again it is odd the 'small government' hates gubmint overreach, and loves them some states rights folks are quick to abandon their principles when they see a stunt to gain publicity.

[QUOTE=captainawesome;1062040040]Why aren't school boards allowed to make local rules? I guess national education is a Republican goal now.[/QUOTE

Despite occassionally hearing some noise about the federal take over of education from GOP figures, the Republican establishment hasn't seriously opposed federal involvement in education in quite some time. In fact, they have expanded it (see No Child Left Behind). As for this particular bill, cutting off the lure of federal dollars is a guaranteed way to make schools drop these ridiculous policies. No school is going to risk being cut off from the federal teet over zero tolerance.

So while I truly wish we could go back to state and local controlled (and funded) education, if we are going to blindly pump federal dollars into the education system this is one of the less objectionable strings they could attach to it.
Slipping into madness is good for the sake of comparison - Unknown.

Right up until the schools recind the rules, absolutely. Or maybe they should just stop paying all administrators and teachers so long as the rules are in place. That would work immediately.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

To some degree, it should be. Reality doesn't change from school district to school district and if the point of public education is to teach students the facts, then one school board, made up of local parents and largely uneducated, shouldn't be able to vote to teach creationism in the classroom or block sex ed or whatever. The whole point of having a public educational system in the first place is to produce educated and productive members of society. There's no point in not having a minimal curriculum that everyone has to learn and if local boards want to teach above and beyond that, fine.
