These days it makes you a homophobe, might get you fired from your job and it means that you're really a closeted gay unwilling to accept who you really are on the inside
You probably just shouldn't use it at all just to be on the safe side

I thought what Baldwin said was funny. There was no "slur" there, just a nice, and rather common, metaphor for violence "stick a foot up your ass". Him saying the writer would probably like that wasn't exactly homophobic.
The only questionable bit was his use of "queen". But, come on. Calling that a slur is ridiculous. And, I don't even like Baldwin. I don't like any of them, actually.
